I went to open an account with beteasy today to take advantage of their first deposit offer ($500). Once I clicked on the promotion i noticed in the small print that residents of VIC, NSW, WA and SA are excluded from the offer.

BetEasy are sorry that we cannot make this offer available to you. The Offer is forbidden by Victorian, NSW, WA and SA state law.

You’ll have to cop it sweet for now and look on the bright side. BetEasy will do its best to add to the entertainment of watching your favourite sports with a bet riding on the result.

Since when has this been the case?

Its always been the case bucks, most of them still do it they just wont advertise it because its against the law.

The thinking is, the amount of people they suck, I mean get in, will give them more combined than the fine is anyway.

Exactly. I think the terminology of 'free bets' is the obstacle as far as the legislation goes. Various bookmakers offer 'Bonus' bets or deposit 'match' promotions. ;)

Correct Kramer, they can give you free bets, but they cant give you incentive to sign up with them.

you're not allowed to entice someone to sign up by offering a free bet or other enticement.
You are however allowed to give a current customer a free bet.

So you could have a standard part of the contract that if you opened an account between January 21st and Fenruar21st and kept it open for longer than 72hrs we will give you $500 bonus bets.

I have heard of people in NSW opening accounts on the condition that bonus bets will be forthcoming. The law is an ass. I don't know how banning online live betting is supposed to be the silver bullet that cures problem gambling? There is nothing worse than calling up and seeing the price quoted change whilst you are on hold.

    Amen to that

Just calling is a pain in the ass, but by the time I've given them my details, they've verified it's me, found the market and quoted the price it's gone 90% of the time

No, it prevents you from getting the best price possible. Which is half the battle win winning on the punt.

if Kevin Rudd won the last election In play online betting would be legal by now. On the phone to betfair grinds me down sometimes to the point I can't be bothered having a bet

Is that possible that it could only be a glitch on their system? image
