Bar Plates?
West Australian Racing
Bar plates is the most important gear change on a horse before you start punting. If a horse has bar plates on, you are backing horses with bad feet.Stats show that this month 4 winners from 40 starters with bar plates on all country and Perth meetings this month. All 4 winners were 3/1 favs.5 of the other 15 runners under 12/1 have been placed.Let's see how horse's,today,go with bar plates on at Carnarvon. RC2-No3,RC4-No2,RC5-No2,RC6-No1.Interesting to see in the last race at Carnarvon, Twin City Soldier has the bar plates off.Usually a good sign that it's feet are better!

Appreciate the info Rooboy !
I can honestly say, I have never really looked at bar plates as an important gear change.
What you say makes perfect sense, and the stats back this up.
I will follow with interest.
Rooboy " Stats show that this month 4 winners from 40 starters with bar plates on all country and Perth meetings this month. All 4 winners were 3/1 favs.5 of the other 15 runners under 12/1 have been placed."
if you are saying "
so far this month there have been 4 race winners from 40 starters in the State with bar shoes and of the balance of 40 starters - 15 have been under 12/1 - with 5 of these having been also placed.....that is 9 win/placed from 40 - @ 22.5%
that flies in the face of your theory ...or are you a farrier with a heap of heart bar shoes for sale ?
having bar shoes on has never stopped me backing a horse..maybe cos we have had good performances and Saturday winners with them..but each to there own..Will be interesting to see how it unfolds at Carnarvon.
Does it make a difference if it is a Bletchley Park???? haha
A bar shoe on any leg is a sign of a big problem and doesn't inform you of what the complaint is..... a bar shoe
is just a tool to give the horse relief from pain by stopping the hoof from flexing as much. The real trick is finding out what is the cause of the pain in the first place,eg bruise, laminitis, etc.

A classic example was Dominating yesterday as soon as the fields came out I thought it had a mortgage on that race until I noticed it had bar plates on for the first time when I looked at the gear changes on Thursday, after that I had no interest in being on it and it ran well below its performance at its previous start.

Bar plates are also used for horses with long pasterns that tend to get down on thier bumpers. It alters the angle that the hoof makes contact with the ground and tends to help. A horse won't try an inch if the touch their bumpers.
I personaly don't like them as I feel that a horse with bar shoes on seem to look scratchy because when the foot hits the ground the bar acts as a brake and puts extra pressure on the joints but in saying that some horses do need them to stand them upright.
Some farriers take off heel and tend to leave the toe long which doesn't help in my opinion. I have found that they go better with short toe and as much heel as possible. A few people will disagree with me but that is how I have found best results in my experiance.
belmont race 4 dominating
$1.60 started at with bar plates on.
just incredible.
Rooboy ...now i understand your stance - your post was unclear as to which way you thought - GOOD or BAD .
PS no study needed from this end. & Carnarvon yeilded 1xwin,1 x2nd, 1 x 3rd from four bar shoe horses..
SPUDLEY - that is simply a very silly statement - like many corrective plates - bar plates perform a very important role in keeping some horses racing. One Bunbury Stakes winner raced with shoes on backwards

I was still trying to recover from Operational the third leg of my treble getting beaten, fortunately Classique ivory got me back in the ball game and the belmont guineas was a very good result it would have even better if purple tiger had snatched third as had the tri anyway or alternatively if Northpace had won as I only had Summah's Touch and Northpace to win in the tri and backed them both for nice results.

R2 8th/9
R3 11 &9th of 12
R4 9th /13
R6 2nd ,13th , 6th of 14
R7 6th /15
R8 5th, 9th ,14th , 3rd of 16
Does any of that PROVE or DISPROVE your theory related to BAR SHOES - "Bar plates is (sic) the most important gear change on a horse"
Is it GOOD OR BAD -tell us how to work it out !!!
RC2-No9 - 50/1 - 8 lgths away- finished 8th
RC3-No4 - 15/1 - 6 lgths away- finished 9th- was a last start winner,less weight,same class,better draw.
What went wrong? Ahh maybe there was a late gear change with bar plates going on!
No2 - 15/1 - 8 lgths away- finished 11th- Has good first up form.Maybe the dist was the problem?
RC4-No2 - 30/1 - 3 lgths away-finished 9th.
RC6-No2 - 12/1 - .3 lgths away- finished 2nd- Very unlucky to get beaten by an 8 starter maiden.Get on when they come off!
No13 - 26/1 - 9 lgths away.
RC8-No5 - 40/1 - .75 lgths away.Finished 5th. Good run.
No8 - 7/1 - 2.5 lgths away. Finished 9th.
No9 - 11/1 - 4 lgths away.Finished 14th.
Horses with bar plates OFF first time!
RC6-No6 - 8/1 -1 lgth away. Finished 4th.Good run from out there.Not good enough.
RC7-No5 - 11/1 - 2.75 lgths away.Even run,but improved from last run!
RC8-No14 - 20/1 - .35 lgths away.Excellent run, and nearly knocked the hot pot's!!!!!.
% rate of what?
nothing can be drawn from these results - no proof to any supposed theory.
The application of bar plates has a proper place - but to suggest it creates base for a puibnting selection criteria is simply, silly .
