I stand corrected here but I thought after Chloe allegedly caused all that interference in Cats Fun's cup, apprentices...claiming..we not permitted to ride in future cups.

I thought it was 3kg claimers that were excluded, BK can only claim 2kg in the metro area.

while most of you might think the ride on Simply Adorable was one of the bad ones, I reckon thats exactly the way the horse needs to be ridden. Definitely got it into a hole as opposed to wallowing with the back markers.
Paddy actually nearly pulled it off. Im sure Ranger, Tranquility and a few others going forward ruined the plan A, but taking off when he did almost stole it.
The two soft runs when she was held up on the fence probably cost her today. Just one more hard run and she might have prevailed.
The each way was......well, simply adorable!

    Agreed!

Apprentices can ride after approval of stewards.

Run the Perth Cup at 3200m and at the Easter carnival when the weather is hopefully kinder. More chance of getting a better quality field.
Run a New Years Day Cup ($250k listed race?) over 2400m on Jan 1

Agreed, the original 3200m Perth Cup should be the culmination of the Bunbury/Pinjarra Cups and be held on the last day of Ascot each season.

2400m Cup on New Years Day to culminate the Railway/KT/Cox etc.

Be splitting your field if you do that (ie won't be able to be up for 2,400m 1st Jan and then again / still at Easter for 3,200m)

Could just be a $100k cup race and make the Summer Scorcher the bigger $ race.
Move the Cox Stakes to New Years Day and re-badge it, or the Towton Cup.
Field on NY Day wouldn't be any worse than we had and PC at Easter would be attractive for Adelaide Cup horses too.
There was previously a 2800m Cup Trial race at Pinjarra which could be re-introduced. Re-badge that as the WA St Ledger which desperately needs a new home on our calendar.

Plenty of options better than the current format.

Make the Cox Stakes the 2400m (return it to 2400m) race on New Years Day, make the St.Leger (3 & 4yo) and the Towton Cup the lead up races, run mid December.

Most of the casual racegoers/drinkers wouldn't know if they moved the Perth Cup anyway - they are mostly oblivious to the racing part of the day anyway.

They get a huge crowd the first day back at Ascot each season, because it's advertised well - make the last day at Ascot just as big!

As Funkster said, so many options!

Nov/Dec = miler to middle distance horses
Mar/Apr = middle distance to staying horses

I agree 90% of the crowd wouldn't know if it were a field of maideners or a field of superstars going around in the Perth Cup but they do know it's the Perth Cup. Have a new years race meet that doesn't contain a race called the Perth Cup and the crowd will drop.........

A very good idea and one that deserves serious thought. Run it early enough in the spring though that the winner could have a spell and chase the dream of running in the Melbourne Cup. I think this is a great idea Funkster and could reinvigorate the race...

Could they get a bigger crowd on a different "Perth Cup" day though ?
(ie when not competing with other new year events)

Your point is most valid, people know that day as 'Perth Cup' day.

But in saying that, do you honestly reckon that no one would go to the races on New Years Day if there wasn't a Perth Cup on? I think it has become the in-thing and the place to be seen on New Years Day, so it would change things up, but it could work!

But if they move the date to April, think they'd still get 15k people there in April. and probably 10-15k on New Years Day.

Not sure Tivers if they would get a bigger crowd, but New Years Day would still get a lot of people to the track.

At the end of the day, it most likely will never happen!

    You are spot on, payjones.
I think steve could put over a very good argument at a PR committee/executive meeting.
He makes a lot of sense.

I wasn't making much sense at 2am on Sunday morning! :abeer:
