One of the luckless stories of 2017, Impressive Racing's Gatting, will start his assault on the WA Derby & Lex Piper stakes this Saturday at Pinjarra.

After finishing runner-up at his past two with William Pike on board, he now secures the services of Mattheiu Autier for his road to the 2400m Derby.

With over $91,000 in the bank to date and a record of 7:3-2-1 the best appears still to come for the Hard Spun gelding.

Yes we / he will, but it's been great fun so far. If he runs last in the derby we will still have a great day with lots of beers and a good laugh.

    Ummmmm, no.
If he's not a winning chance he won't be in it.
You don't ruin good horses for beers and laughs...
    (And the Derby ruins horses).

Will be the end of said campaign more than likely.
You also don't run horses in derbys under duress (ie on anything but perfect preps).

Well, you can...... but you're wasting your time (and horse).

True, he certainly has a mortgage on the race year upon year. In fact, I reckon he could go to the bank and ask for a loan on the prizemoney to be paid upfront and if the banker does their due diligence - they would approve it

Can anyone list any 3yo that have actually shown anything over a trip in recent times, or can flush out potential Derby candidates prior to Noms on the 20th

Khwaga. Will be an extraordinary effort to keep him until then but will eat up the 2400

you guys in Gatting..listen and heed the words of Tivs.

you can have years of fun missing the derby...do not go into it for the "wankatunity".....

Agree it would have to find a few lengths to get anywhere near one of Bobs 5 runners

Lol you don't need to be preaching to us falc
At the end of the day it comes down to one persons decision on what path the horse takes

Dungy I'd of thought final salute was one of his b graders? On what it's done so far even if it was to get the derby trip it doesn't have the talent to win
  • hashhash    7,495 posts
Royal Star on the other hand.... It's dam star encounter ran third in a defect and didn't win any race shorter than 1800 so it's bred to get the trip and will eat up the 2400 and any distance races leading up to it

Go watch the Guineaus run then come back to me on Final Salute mate  ,Derby has always been the target and out of a Zabeel mare it will stay no probs , Royal Star looks one out of the box

Dungy, you make me laugh "Royal Star looks one out of the box"
I think her biggest trouble,is getting in the box at the start.Hopefully they can cure her of that problem, but it will be of a major concern to them

Why does the author think he has been "luckless"?

Where's Wally (by Rogano) certainly wont be heading towards a Derby. Hopefully he makes it back to the track....

Looking at those horses he has nomd you cant see Bob and Grant/Alana  not winning the Oaks and Derby he is going to have upto 3-4 in each and all quality

Just looking at the run of Gatting again with a view to the Piper, do you think it looked on the line like a good trial for two weeks time over 1600M ?
  • TheDivaTheDiva    13,248 posts
Yep very good effort. That part of the track was OFF. any horse finishing in the placings on that inside part of the track is worth following next start. Riasc was another notable one

Didnt see the race but watched thr replay,as there had been a bit of talk about him, but watching rrplsy he had no option as i seen evrryone else go wide, so i thought it was a good effort concidering he was in the worst part of the track, and seeing he ran the 2nd fastest last 600,so id say he would be worth watching, maybe not a Derby horse but looks like he could br a very handy type.
