THE GOOD:
Bob's Breeding Barn!
There's no disputing that WA's leading breeder Bob Peters' breeding formula is a recipe for success. His record is as consistent as it is incredible and he landed his fifth WATC Derby in the past six years on Saturday, whilst also having raced two other Derby winners in 1990 and 2000. Peters sits second on the Australian Leading Breeders premiership table for Black Type Victories for the 2015-2016 season. It's a brilliant achievement when you consider only the HH Sheik Mohammed-owned and global breeding-powerhouse Darley is ranked above him.
THE NOT SO GOOD:
Rule Review!
A $1,000 fine and two-weeks suspension for Joseph Azzopardi "using the whip on six additional occasions than permitted prior to the 100m"... You've got to be kidding?! There have been some average rules over time but surely this one takes the cake. The whip breach has achieved nothing thus far except for raising revenue through jockey fines and reducing certain type of horse's winning chances in races. Kia Ora Koutou was under enormous pressure turning for home and if Azzopardi didn't pull the stick when he did it could be argued that he would've finished 6th-8th ($10,000 stake-money), instead of 4th ($16,000 stake-money). Very stiff.
THE TRAINER:
Warwick Wonders!
Yet ANOTHER Saturday Metropolitan winning-double for Team Warwick and an amazing training-performance to prepare Dubai Escapade to victory in the $150,000 Western Australia Cup (3200m) after racing just once since the Perth Cup on January 2nd. Cool Passion also returned in style to score a fairly soft win first-up to make it four in a row, while Wink And A Nod had her fourth race-start in three weeks and ran another cracker.
THE JOCKEY:
You're a wizard, Willy!
It takes a lot of guts and confidence to ride horses as patiently as W Pike and if you watch a replay of the $400,000 WATC Derby you'll see the best in the business do just that. While most other riders were off and rolling from the 600m mark, Pike was biding his time back about third-last in running. It would've been quite easy for him to start to panic as the field stretched out and he lost more and more touch with the leaders, however, he knew what he had under him and didn't make a move until they turned for home. He extricated Arcadia Dream off the fence upon straightening and allowed her to unleash her devastating turn-of-foot, running the final 600m in a slick 35.06sec and gobbling up to runaway leader over the final stages.
Special mention must also go to Lucy Warwick who rode another Metropolitan winning-double and showed brilliant maturity in her winning ride on Dubai Escapade in the 3200m event as well as her cunning effort on Cool Passion in the last.

I cannot see why jocks, trainers and owners plus the general punting public have not been up in arms over this stupid, stupid rule.
the whip DOES NOT hurt the horse to any degree, its like a human being whacked by a plastic fly swat.
