Why is the W.A greyhound industry in such decline.

The standard of racing is disgraceful. They now have maidens on a Saturday night.

Talk about catering to the lowest common denominator.

Lift your game W.A greyhounds. In years gone by you excelled.

Who runs the show these days. It is an embarrassment.

Tell me about it! I went there last Saturday night with a mate of mine and there were four 297m races (including the last 3 races and a 25 minute gap between the last two 297m races) as well as a maiden. The majority of the other races didn't have full fields. There were more people playing poker inside than there were people watching the races. The joint had no atmosphere whatsoever.

Good question, particularly in regard to distances raced.

Another poor meeting at Cannington Saturday.

Who is falling asleep at the wheel.

Surely there is someone who can arrest the situation.

Where is David Simonette. Make a comeback champ

    Solid meeting tonight.

Cannington uncertainty over the last 5 years has taken its toll on the industry.

The breeding and purchasing of new dogs has stalled.

The confirmation of a new track at Cannington will help but it won`t happen overnight.

The WA government and RWWA have used the greyhounds to prop up the other 2 codes for the last 10 years.

Despite all the negativity, tonight Star Recall has made the final of the Sale Cup final and Tureaud has made the Silver Chief final in Victoria (both Group 1`s).

WA greyhound breeding producing the best in Australia , can`t say the same for Harness and Thoroughbreds

You are spot on there, especially with regard to WA harness and the complete shambles that has become. It was the envy of other states during the 80 early 90's.

Care to elaborate LInc. Stake money very strong in comparison to other states and not sure where the complete shambles is.

You were part of the system so your insight would be interesting.

HR just runs riot, and is ruining workplaces everywhere, certainly most big companies Ive worked for. Ridiculous OHS nonsense when it suits and oversights when it doesnt. Hiring people based on their core values and percieved future adherence to a companies 'brand' rather than ability or experience. Imagine going to war with a bloke that couldnt hold a gun but could tell you the 6 thinking hats. They think people 'buy into' corporate beliefs and rally behind 'insert latest buzzword'. The rank and file dont care. Rock up, work, go home is all they care about. They dont want a want a 2 day course on 'how to have a vital conversation'.

Never a truer word spoken about HR they talk about the cost of business in Australia well just remove half the HR industry wont affect productivity one bit  just remove half the bullshit.

Like your ideas as good as any I have read.
  • ChariotsonfireChariotsonfire    3,025 posts
Linc I enjoyed reading your ideas and whilst I do not agree with all of them they are thought provoking and that is something we need. The harness breeding industry is under threat internationally with foal numbers down everywhere even in NZ where WA sources the majority of its metropolitan quality racing product. There have been a number of initiatives introduced for local breeders in recent years according to the WA Standarbred Breeders Newsletter whether they result in increased foal numbers only time will tell.

HR and OHS the growth industries of the last two decades have become a millstone around the neck of all sorts of business and racing has not escaped their tentacles.

One of the problems that harness racing faces is its lack of relevance to an indifferent public that is spoilt for entertainment options.

So far as the national scene is concerned WA still appears to punching above its weight but there appears to be many disgruntled participants out there that cannot compete with the mega stables.

Great work Lincolnism you obviously know what your talking about. Only 2 things I disagree with and as you say it's only opinion might be being a bit selfish here but am a traditionalist in some ways and I dislike seeing tracks closed down.Once gone gone forever. Richmond Raceway I adored. To this day can't get get my head around Fremantle Cup at GP and not RR. Old habits diehard but I like seeing the tracks keep going. The variety provides interest. Also down like downsizing fields am happy with the 12 horse fields prefer that to the 10 but only opinion. Love the story about how the horses coming in to the yard for race 5 must be tired after having contested 4 races, somehow that doesn't surprise me. Gees that Pacing Cup was a great race , when I was a kid they ran 3 heats for that to get in the final just like the Inters. I can remember one year their was a stuff up at the barrier draw ... I think Village a Kid drew 1 fair and square but I think one horse had been left out by mistake somehow something like that and Bill Horn in great sportsmanship said it would be ok to redraw ! I think the Kid drew 10 in the redraw Bill said no worries ... He was right Lewis and The Kid saluted. That should read don't like downsizing field sizes too.

Have to agree about the tracks my grandmother grew up across the road from Richmond Raceway irks me that I never got to go there for a meeting. The risks with closing tracks is it creates a sterile sameness which especially with the trots can become very repetitive.
They need to look at opening another track Byford has been suggested sounds feasible.

    Gloucester Park must improve.

Too many leaders winning. Just boring.

Bring back the old ease out rule.

Not correct Riders. Village Kid did draw one and the barrier draw was done by fireworks and they did not activate for the next horse drawn. They were going to draw the rest by marbles with Village Kid still in barrier one but Gary Lilleyman (Morgan James) carried on and Bill Horn agreed to start from scratch with Village Kid drawing wide in the redraw. Our Ian Mac was heavily backed pre post and sat one/one and got the money.

Yes agree about the fireworks draw , Village Kid won 4 Pacing Cups and I just thought that was one of them , that he still won even though he drew wide in the redraw. Stand corrected. Remember Our Ian Mac driven by Tricky Trevor Warwick father of Justin. Can remember a horse called Microfiche causing a big upset in a heat at about 66/1 and beating Village Kid I'm sure Village Kid won the final that year. Winning 4 WA Pacing Cups at that time was remarkable. I think Bill Duffy had Microfiche .
  • Ridersonthestorm33Ridersonthestorm33    10,942 posts
Just saw that Village Kid drew 6 in the redraw. He won the Pacing Cup in 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989 with Our Ian Mac causing the split by winning in 1987 .. The year of the redraw... The Kid would have taken some beating from barrier 1. Just remembered reading at the time and thought it was great sportsmanship by Horn to not cause a fuss and let them redraw.

The great Fireworks debacle haha ....it wasn't just Lilleyman who was carrying on, Village Kid out of 1 meant the rest should stay home. Microfiche was Ray Duffy, not Bill. The Godecke's bred him from quality mare Omista....the "Balcatta" mafia in (a complimentary way).

It's very strange that Linda Britton hasn't got a dog in the final this year of the Perth Cup.
    Strange that

Final meet at Cannington (old track) tomorrow night. Free entry, decent enough fields and a nice FFA race to end the night. End of an era.

The old tote semaphore board situated down the back straight that you see on Sky has been there since day 1. They were the days when just breaking 32 seconds over the 530 metres was an achievement. Great memories of grass track racing and around 7 or 8 bookmakers. Always been a terrific night out. Big race nights had as good a atmosphere as big races at Ascot or GP.

Decent crowd here tonight, grandstand is nearly full. Probably the biggest crowd I've seen here since the Perth Cup meet this year.

The last race run on the original Cannington track goes to the Halse-Britton combination. A travesty.

So Falcon and Kane like the fact that there is a disqualification factor related to this last track race result. Unbelievable.
