R1. 864 Am Maiden - Scott Embry
A 7 horse 2200m Northam maiden, not the most energetic start to a race meet I've ever seen. I am going to jump aboard the best distance jockey in the race, Jarrad Noske and go with Honour Rock. The Redoubtable gelding has only placed once from 10 outings and this is his chance to view the winners enclosure. Sheza Hurricane ran on quite nicely two starts ago behind Idealist and last start bounded straight to the top for Faithfull. Hard to tell how these small field distance races will pan out but if she can get a soft lead then might be able to hold them out. Bit of Value looks as though he will see out the distance and with the claim of Jerry Noske will carry only 53.5kg. Jerry's older brother Jarrad jumps off to ride Honour Rock and that may be the lead to follow in this lacklustre opener.

Casual Time, looks to have ability, something which most of this field lacks. The Patronize gelding probably needed the debut run, leading and being gunned down late by Military Service who ran a game race last Saturday, 4th beaten less than half a length behind Low Tide. Natural fitness improvement and race experience should see him winning. Mr Sa So is the logical danger but the big question remains, does he know where the finish line is? Strung together 7 consecutive minor placings in Albany last campaign before contesting the the Listed J.C. Roberts. An 11 start maiden with 7 placings, screams roving banker or an all up place multiplier. There are a lot of crosses through the remaining runners on my form and I've ended up with About Turn for third, a 6 year old with only 3 placings from 29 starts who couldn't get the job done at tracks including Narrogin, Moora, Collie, Derbie, Broome and Dongara. Troy Turner aboard is as good as it gets and the Bar Plates have been removed, this is clearly a 2 horse race and honestly anything could run third.
9. CASUAL TIME - 5. MR SA SO - 1. ABOUT TURN
SUGGESTED BET - 9. CASUAL TIME $30
Lots of chances in a very handy 3 year old line up. You could easily make a case for up to 8 runners here. Surrounded was disappointing last start, well supported in the market and underwent a vets examination just prior to the start. If she settles down a little behind the barriers and Knuckey can get into a midfield spot from a very awkward alley then she should be right in the finish. Charlie's Chick ran an eye catcher last start behind Petals and Fairway to Venus, two handy young gallopers. Pike retains the mount and is drawn perfectly, should be hard to beat. Dream Diamond was a little unlucky last campaign, an impressive debut run behind highly promising Parnham filly Vital Importance and then came up against an equally good opponent second up in Ihysahymn. Warm up trial was sound and expecting a show from the son of Lonhro first up at a decent eachway price. Ribotique has a horrible draw to contend with but does look like a filly who will notch up a victory early in her career. Possibly the best race on the card.
13. SURROUNDED - 8. CHARLIE'S CHICK - 2. DREAM DIAMOND
Hopefully the winning feeling is well and truly branded into the brain of Seul Homme, winner of his past three trials, the son of Not A Single Doubt was most impressive in early April at Lark Hill, on one occasion putting Jest Envy Her and Dreamalong away by more than 4 lengths in pretty handy time. Going round at an eachway price and this field isn't overly large or filled with quality so I'm happy enough to have a couple of dollars on speculation. Stellar Enterprise returns after a years lay off and has her first start for new trainer Justine Erkelens, looks the likely leader and finished within 2 lengths of Iseethingsyoudon't the winner of 6 of his 13 starts and over $150k. Minimalist has run two reasonable races in his short career but my obvious concern is returning from a 120 day let up without a trial, may appreciate the 1000m fresh. Sound Effects ran well last start and should improve with race fitness, a definate for the first 4 players. Dear Dorothy clearly has ability and Pike aboard is enough for some people to back it on blind faith but the short price on offer does not attract me one bit.
7. SEUL HOMME - 11. STELLAR ENTERPRISE - 3. MINIMALIST
SUGGESTED BET - 7. SEUL HOMME $15 x $25
Talk of Angels is obviously an attractive proposition on paper; first start in WA, Durrant runner, top 2 finish 100% of the time first up, winner of 2 from 6 and runner up on 2 other occasions but the warm up trial was far from impressive, regardless of riding style and the $1.90 on offer is certainly not appealing. Our Emily Mia looked very good on paper last Saturday as a Durrant runner first up in the state but failed to offer anything in the straight. Governing on the other hand opened up at $5 and looks a much better option. Impressive winner on debut, the 5 year old Snitzel mare looks to have more than her fair share of ability and this is definately winnable. Drop back to 1000m should suit and expect her to be hard to beat. For third I've settled on Graceful Charlie who has only won twice in her 26 start career, getting on in years now but continues to put in respectable performances. Not the juciest price I've ever seen but I'm happy to include her for some trifecta value. Early money for Nothing Personal would suggest he is ready to fire second up after an encouraging first up performance. Good little sprint to kick off the quaddie.
5. GOVERNING - 1. TALK OF ANGELS - 4. GRACEFUL CHARLI
Nobody really enjoys backing horses in the red but Crumpet O'Reilly really should be winning this. If he has even half the talent some people believe he has then he will run them ragged. Formerly with Alan Mathews and then sent to Bob Turrell to fix some feet problems he has landed with Adam Durrant and with a little of that patented Durrant Polish should knock these off pretty easily. First choice stable hoop Peter Knuckey jumps off the second favourite to ride and drawn perfectly in 4 it really should be, pardon the crumpet pun, money for jam. Highway Express ran well on debut behind Governing and with the addition of blinkers in conjunction with the claim of Jerry Noske should be primed for this. I am going to give So Spoilt another chance or two before I put a line through her, clearly patience has been the key with the Medal of Honor mare who finally made it to the races as a 6 year old. Turner on is a plus but the barrier draw is nothing less than a nightmare. Open Era has put together a couple of reasonable run on type efforts and has another crack at the step up to 1300m.
2. CRUMPET O'REILLY(NZ) - 14. HIGHWAY EXPRESS - 13. SO SPOILT
SUGGESTED BET - 2. CRUMPET O'REILLY(NZ) $40
Not many horses win in midweek company and then drop back to provincial class at their next start but that?s exactly what Durrant has done here with Gladstone. He looks very hard to beat after linking together two very good runs for a second and a win. $2.40 on offer early and if you combine that with the Crumpet O'Reilly $1.70 it becomes a very backable $4. The blinkers stay on and he looks incredibly hard to knock off. Duke Ellington is a big grinding type of galloper who looks suited to the mile. Yet to show overly much in the country but should get a perfect run in transit. Rock Bar has only won once from 33 career starts but does boast 6 bridesmaid efforts. All of his recent runs have been full of merit and could round out the first 4s.
2. GLADSTONE - 4. DUKE ELLINGTON(NZ) - 5. ROCK BAR
SUGGESTED BET - 2. GLADSTONE $40
Josie's Babe has only won once in her career and it was at 41-1 at Mount Barker on debut coming from last. Ridden completely differently at her second start when sitting behind the $1.50 favourite and winner, The Millionare finishing ahead of highly promising middle distance galloper Mr Utopia. Since then her form has been poor to say the least but her last two runs have been encouraging. Especially last start coming from 12th on the corner only beaten 1.3 lengths to Gladstone finishing 2 lengths ahead of the favourite in this race, Flying Solo. Carrying only 54.5kg P.King 'Duck' should get a good look at them in the straight. Flying Solo has really only had success at this distance and her run here two starts ago behind subsequent winner Star City Boy was full of merit. Always goes round short in the market considering her strike rate of 8% however, a win doesn't look too far away. Miss Sanfran was another surprise debut winner going round at $81, that was on this track and at this distance and her form since then has been handy enough. A good grinding performance when 3 lengths 4th behind Sharp Turn after being sent forward by the Pontiff. Gracetown and Crystal Maker both find it very hard to find the finishing post but do represent possible roving banker options at value.
