Luckygray will target the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) first-up at Flemington on March 9.

The Poletti-trained galloper hasn’t raced since winning the Group I Kingston Town Classic over 1800 metres on December 8.

In his last venture to Melbourne, the Bradbury’s Luck gelding finished fourth in the Group II Peter Lawrence Stakes and 11th in the Group II Memsie Stakes on wet tracks.

The striking grey is yet to taste defeat over 1200 metres in five starts and is likely to meet Barakey in the feature sprints.

Poletti said the Doncaster Mile in April was still a possibility for Luckygray, who returned to his stables on Monday.

"The Newmarket is his main aim," Poletti told The West.

"He will be entered for the Doncaster, but whether he has another start will depend on how things go.

"I plan to get stabling at Flemington so he can have a trial up the straight before the Newmarket."

Oh how i cant wait. What do we all love as punters? Winners!

It will be interesting to see how he goes down the straight, many good horses have tried and failed. Hope Barakey and Luckygray can represent WA well, which i dont have many doubts on.

without wishing to sound a nay-sayer, r-g, but there are some pretty smart ones over east...
for a strat i'd engaged a local jock for both of them....

Likewise Falc i have the jury out on Barakey as he didnt beat the 3rd stringers[Pinwheel.Spirit of Boom ect ] by less than a length will need to find another length or 2 to beat the Sea Sirens and that type of horse

Just book your flights people. Win, lose or draw for the West Aussies, it's going to be a ripper of a race.

I think Luckygray has more chance in the Newmarket than Barakey. Similar type of horse to Scenic Blast who was suited very well down the straight. I think no doubt he would've won the Winterbottom had he gone there, got a better sprint than Power Princess who got within a half length of Barakey.

Depends on what weight they get as well i guess. I couldnt imagine Luckygray getting over 56kg, where barakey would have to be on the minimum or just above.
Black Caviar wont go there as she would get top weight, which im guessing is 58kg for Mares? With doubts about her come back, i think they will take easier options.

An easier option as they might be a tad scared taking on the 2 from the West :)) LMFAO
LG is 117 and Barakey is 112 on ratings if LG got 56kg and the great mare got 59kg or even 60kg it wouild be a no race still IMO

Haha im sure she has no fears after what she went through at Royal Ascot.

I was more curious however about the weight BC would recieve, anyone know the maximum that can be given in the Newmarket? Haylist got 58kg for a gelding, but hes a few rating points behind black caviar who i would imagine would get 58kg which would be the equivilant to a gelding/stallion 60kg. Unsure if anyone knows the stipulation for this race?

The Newmarket hasn't been won first up for about a hundred years and he is going to do it with a decent weight.

    Good luck

Luckygray is a perfect horse for the Newmarket, Gold Trump effectively won the Newmarket first up having not raced for six weeks, numerous horses have won it 2nd up.
Not that many horses run first up in it as they usually either run in either the lightning or the oakleigh plate first up or both so that stat's pretty much irrelevant.
Black Caviar would have to get 60kg having now won an international Group 1 beating a genuine superstar in Moonlight Cloud in the process and seriously doubt Moody would ask her to do that at this stage of her career having already set a weight carrying record for a mare of 58kg plus she's won numerous Group1's since so she certainly wouldn't get anything less than 60kg.

Racing in Australia started in Sydney. It was obvious Victorians were then going to race in the opposite direction :-)

It's actually the other way around
