Ascot R1. Westspeed 3yo Handicap Preview - Greg Hooper
There doesn’t look to be a great deal of speed in this opening event with BIPPO NO BUNGUS potentially getting a soft lead.
I’ve settled on (2) SWAP YA as I just think she might be the strongest over the 1400m. She beat a nice horse on debut and she then rattled home over the 1200m at her most recent outing. I suspect Peter Knuckey will ride her positively and she will be in a position to strike when the field turns for home.
(1) BIPPO NO BUNGUS is a definite winning hope, especially if ridden positively early.
(9) ROYAL HOTNESS has ability and ran well first up. She was simply beaten by a couple of smart fillies.
(8) ONFRIAR trialled well and she should finishing off strongly late.
2. SWAP YA - 1. BIPPO NO BUNGUS - 9. ROYAL HOTNESS

(7) FIVE FIELDS was ridden cold last start and was never in the hunt. W Pike goes on and she is the blowout hope.
(6) DA VERRAZZZANO is a still maiden but she has solid first four claims again.
(10) NO TIME TO FLIRT is another maiden but she’ll get the right trip from the inside draw.
1. HELENA MISS - 7. FIVE FIELDS - 6. DA VERRAZZANO
I found this a really tricky race to line up with plenty of winning chances. Speed should be genuine with ZEDSPIEL and TOMBOLA freewheeling along up front.
Without a great deal of confidence I’ve settled on (1) LEONORA LARRIKEN. He was a very good first up winner when he steamed home to nail Zedspiel over 1400m but was subsequently beaten as odds on favourite in small field over a mile. I suspect he will be a better horse in a bigger field and more genuine tempo.
(4) ZEDSPIEL broke though for a deserved win last start. He’ll lead, roll along and is the one to run down.
(6) TOTES AMAZE ran a terrific race fresh and then was never in the hunt after jumping from an inside gate. Watch for him late.
(7) BED OF NAILS ran well on debut and is an each way hope.
1. LEONORA LARRIKEN - 4. ZEDSPIEL - 6. TOTES AMAZE
There looks to be decent speed with MISS LEGACY, SCHOOL RUMBLE and EASTWARD pressing forward.
I thought the local debut of (11) EASTWARD was full of merit as she had to do plenty of work from her wide gate and was zapped late by handy galloper. Steven Parnham goes on and from barrier 6 he can lead if he wants to. She should be hard to beat.
(8) PININCI is a talented type with a big finish. He was given every chance last start but just couldn’t reel in the winner. From his wide gate he’ll go back and rattle late.
(6) GREY JABIRU was desperately unlucky when resuming from a spell. Not sure barrier 1 is ideal but if he gets the breaks he can win.
(1) SUCCESS PARK enjoyed the gun run last start and prevailed. This race has more depth.
11. EASTWARD - 8. PININCI - 6. GREY JABIRU
On paper there isn’t a great deal of speed in this race with SASS ‘N’ PING looking like he should get a cheapish lead.
I’ve settled on (2) THE CAVALIERI who is a very honest galloper and he should get the perfect trip from his good draw. He should be strong over the concluding stages.
(4) SASS ‘N’ PING was given no peace upfront last start and it was big effort to hold onto second. As already mentioned he should get it much easier upfront this time around.
(1) ZERO TO SIXTY is not the easiest horse to catch but from barrier 1 he’ll get the perfect trip and he is well graded.
(6) JACKO THE FLIRT was a solid first up winner at Northam. This is harder but he has first four claims.
2. THE CAVALIERI(NZ) - 4. SASS'N'PING - 1. ZERO TO SIXTY
There should be good speed in this 1200m sprint with HURRICANE HOUND high balling along with MOSSTRADAMUS, TOWN CHAMPION and SCENITON in his hammer.
(1) YOUNG LIONEL resumes from a spell and he’s a galloper with plenty of ability. He’ll get back in running but should appreciate the strong speed and rattle home late. I think he might have a class edge on most of these.
(8) TOWN CHAMPION trialled nicely and he can get over without spending too much petrol he’s a definite winning chance.
(13) TRADING DAY has ability and should be strong late.
(4) MOSSTRADAMUS won well on debut and had plenty of issues at his next start when he failed.
1. YOUNG LIONEL - 8. TOWN CHAMPION - 13. TRADING DAY
A big field of mares but not a great deal of natural speed. For that reason I’m going for (6) ROYAL INFERNO who I think should get a gun run just behind the pace. She’s produced in all her three career starts and this looks another nice assignment.
(3) MY FASCINATION has plenty of ability. She’ll get back from her wide draw but should be thundering home late.
(4) BITTER EMU resumes for a new stable and William Pike takes the mount. She’s a hot and cold mare but her recent trial was good.
(1) YAMUNOTRI drops in grade and she can play a part at her best.
6. ROYAL INFERNO - 4. BITTER EMU - 11. MISS DELISH
Another big field but again not much speed. You would think FLYING METAL should be able to lead even from his wide gate.
I’m going for (13) GRAND BEAU who looks ready to win and Daniel Staeck goes on. He hit the line with gusto last start and the 1600m looks perfect now.
(2) THE WEAPON powered home last start to post a win for the JT Warwick stable. The man is a genius and there is no reason he can’t get this horse to win again.
(12) FLYING METAL is a definite winning hope with the right run on top of the speed.
(9) MON BISCUIT drops in class and distance and is the blowout hope.
13. GRAND BEAU - 2. THE WEAPON - 12. FLYING METAL
