Northam R1. Baileys Grosorb Maiden Preview - Gary Wright
Wheatbelt Swallow ran a good race at his last start when third to Pennywood at Belmont, he was just run over at the end of that race. He has since been spelled but does appeal here on that last effort. He did win a trial two weeks ago in preparation for his return and does have the services of Paul Harvey this afternoon, plus a very nice draw, all good pointers for this assignment. Moreish looks the main danger here, although he does start from the outside of the field over the 1100metres, and that isn’t the distance here at Northam to draw so wide. However on his previous runs he does look to be right in this race. Grand Palace is down in class on her previous runs and should be worth putting into novelty bets, and Moshayer may be the best of the rest.

Very difficult to predict anything with confidence here, sixteen to face the starter over the 1100metre scamper, and a few of the fancies drawn wide, probably best to leave this alone. If you are looking for an investment then maybe Queen Of Quincy may be the way to go. She has been costly to punters in the past so I would tread warily, but she will start from a nice gate today, which could be so important with such a big field. Toro Express has been just behind the placegetters of late, Busters Empire ran a good race at Belmont last start and one that may be at odds with a good first up record is Foo Flyer, she is very well drawn for this race today, but all in all its probably just too hard to predict any of these with great confidence.
10. QUEEN OF QUINCY - 2. TORO EXPRESS - 1. BUSTER'S EMPIRE
Its hard not to go off the form showed in the Leggy Blonde race at Pinjarra back on Aug 9 here, as Due To Reign, Tilla Chance and Irish Sovereign all finished just behind the winner that day. The best run was by Irish Sovereign who finished just a long head behind the winner that day, so we will go with him to break through here. The barrier is a poor one but the 1600metre start isn’t the worse start to draw wide at Northam with the long run to the first bend so don’t get put off by that. William Pike to ride again is a big plus. Due To Reign should also run a good race once more as should Tilla Chance, both look to be right in this race as well. The Bund is probably next best here.
3. IRISH SOVEREIGN - 1. DUE TO REIGN - 2. TILLA CHANCE
A difficult race to tip with confidence primarily because of the size of the field, but will go with I See Luck to break his duck today. His form has been very consistent with four placings from five starts, his last start was excellent behind Lequest at Pinjarra only going down by a half head that day, and with a good barrier in the big field and the Wolfe/McGruddy combination currently enjoying a run of success, we will tip him as the on top selection here. I Say Sasso has also been racing pretty well of late and should break through shortly, her last start behind Peggies Dream was a good one. Special Favour was also a good run at her first start at Pinjarra, she would probably be the selection here except for drawing the outside barrier, so she will need luck to overcome that hurdle here, with Sordello the best of the rest in this race.

Copper Rocket has been going reasonably well at his three race starts to date, is drawn very well in a big field so might go quite well in this race. Once again we are looking at a maximum sixteen starters in a maiden race so not one to get overly excited about. Copper Rockets last start behind Who’s To Blame at this track was a good pointer to a forward showing today, so he would be a definite for quaddie punters in this. Youbetya is another performing reasonably well in country tracks and must also be in this race with a good chance, another drawn very well in this big field today. Oratorio Storm ran a improved race at his last start here when fourth to Two Techniques last week, should be around the place again, with Foxing another in with a chance in a tough race.
10. COPPER ROCKET - 2. YOUBETYA(NZ) - 5. ORATORIO STORM
McBlitzam seemed to just run out of a little steam at his first start back from a spell when third to Regal Honour at Pinjarra, so given he should be improved by that run he will go very close this afternoon. The problem might be the outside barrier draw, but we will back Paul Harvey to somehow overcome that and boot him home today, it could be a good afternoon for the Harrison/Harvey combination. Mr Magic looks one of the main dangers here, he has been running well at Belmont and should be at peak fitness after a few runs in this time. Ghost Trader did have excuses last start, so it may pay to go on his Northam victory on Aug 2nd when assessing his chances. Murphy M’Boy is the other one that looks to have prospects in this race.
2. MURPHY M'BOY - 5. MR MAGIC - 6. GHOST TRADER
His first race start was most impressive when winning here back on Aug 2, he was due to run last week but was scratched from that race, so assuming he is at full fitness today he will definitely be the selection here. Drawn beautifully for Patrick Carbery, he should be able to roll to the front or settle forward and bring up his second victory from as many starts. Talk Up A Storm may be the main opposition today, she should be approaching her top form now after a few runs this time in. Classic Knowledge has been about the place at his last few starts and looks a chance also, with Rock Bar the best of the others, he continues to race consistently without winning of late.
2. MOSSTRADAMUS - 9. TALK UP A STORM - 1. CLASSIC KNOWLEDGE
Dont Doubt Buster may bounce back to form today, he did get a big mention in the stewards report at his last start so it may pay to forget he went around that day and go on his previous three starts this campaign which were full of merit, including a win at the Belmont midweeks on Jul 11. He is beautifully drawn today in barrier two, he does loom as a good each way bet in this final race of the day. Dangers may be Whisky Prince, slightly disappointing last start, but carrying a postage stamp weight today, also drawn well, and Bawcatme, who also won on Jul 11 at Belmont. Graceful Charli also comes in with claims for the novelties as she normally does.
2. DON'T DOUBT BUSTER - 3. WHISKY PRINCE - 6. BAWCATME
