I see Bob Peters had another foal to race out of this mare Angel Wings today at pinny and as the previous one [cant think of its name he got rid of it at the sales it won a maiden in the bush] doesnt seem to be that quick ?? harder raced mares throw foals ?? This one doesnt look like it could throw a tennis ball ?? any thoughts gang ??

In fairness Angel Wing is only by Hurricane Sky, and was pretty good first up. Didnt see todays race but I wouldnt give up on her just yet.

also, the winner of the race is a son of Prime Again. A quality mare who raced with as much distinction and as long as Avenida IMO

Look at the Diva she cant throw a horse as well and the late great Sunline could be something in that

Just talking about this very thing today, over raced mares don't seem to throw great offspring regardless of how good the mare was. Unraced mares have a much better record of producing, provided they were from decent families.

Would always prefer an unraced half or full sister to a Gr 1 winner, rather than a Gr 1 winner with 30 plus starts.

Take into account the percentages tho, theres a s$%tload of unraced mares out there and not many high quality raced mares..

and of course we all prefer to buy/breed from lightly raced/unraced mares, thats where the bargains are to be had!

She was a great horse and won a bit on her too. There may be something in the fact that great race mares dont produce quality. There is always exceptions to any rule but its something a prospective owner must think about. Will be adding this idea to the memory bank....

cheers falcon. on a differnt issue, is there any rule or wise man tip relating to the age of the mare? i.e. do younger mares throw better offspring than older ones or vice verser???

In the UK they don't like anything out of a mare in her teens at the foaling date. That being based on retiring to Stud and around 6 seasons being serviced.

If a proven method of selecting the RIGHT mare that would produce winners was available then no-one would buy a slow horse, it is a raffle, just don't buy/breed from a SLOW mare!!!!!

i disagree...many a good horse has come from a racecourse failure mother.

When I was interested in its first foal the trainer of Vintage Silver (well bred by Holmes A Court) told me it couldn't run out of site in a black-out.
Based on that I didn't bother. The filly, Silver Empire won 5 of its first 6 in Sth Africa incl a listed win and Gr 1 placing
