Hot Style won at Belmont Park 31May1969 ridden by D R Tucker from New Zealand

West Australian Racing
Hello,
My brother rode this horse and won the owners were Mr. & Mrs. R G Bell and Trainer a F E Spencer.
I have just found a lovely photo the owners sent to my brother and wondered if they are still around or perhaps their son or daughter.

+1 -1

Showing my memory still works about 1968-69 I went to Belmont races and Hot Style and Star of The Desert were 2 Very Good Horses, that fought out a finish, might have been the Belmont Park Cup but it was 5000 Beers Ago

Hmm, I was there...Frank Treen from memory. Was a big day for youthful Jay Jay.....my head may well have been 45 degrees off centre, if not on course, certainly later that evening. Legal drinking age was 21 back then.....might have had to do a bit of bluffing.

While we are on the Eddie Spencer memoirs did you know he was a Tram Driver with Perth Tram services, and he owned a big block of land bounded by Matheson road Aurum Street and Keymer street, I t was known from the late 60s to the 80s as Spencers paddock and a lot of Youngsters were broken in and educated around Spencers Paddock. In about 1981 Dallas Dempster the former Albany Accountant who put together the Genting Groups bid for the Burswood Island Casino (AKA Rivervale Rubbish Dump) purchased Spencers Paddock, built a giant barn and associated yards that looked amazingly like the same bricks the casino was built out of. Once completed Dallas formed The Association with Lou Luciani as his private trainer which saw the pair win about 8 Perth training/owning premierships. The big stable was demolished about 4 years ago and now has about 6 houses on it Not one of the owners interested in race horses Go Figure…

Jack Jones was captured at the same time on Crete, enoyed Bed and Breakfast courtesy of the 3rd Reich for 3 years. One morning they woke up in Stalag number whatever it was, not a guard in site, abandoned ship. The Germans wisely took to their scrapers overnight, About an hour later, 3 large tanks rambled into camp. Jack said the bar of Hershee's chocolate an American Tank Commander gave him was, and remained, the best thing he had ever tasted in his life. It is very hard to imagine what they all went through, living on a miserable diet of half rotten potato soup and rock hard stale bread schwarzbrot.  Some of them amazingly made it to a ripe old age........but many didn't.

Jack trained and drove his first winner Black Lee at Gloucester Park on September 18, 1948, the first of 9 metroploitan wins for Black Lee.  His last as a trainer was 145 wins later on December 12, 1986 when Phil piloted Lady Be Cool to victory at Richmond Raceway.

Yes boys Hugh Jamieson AKA Barney Rubble was a POW and won a railway with Tudor Mak then Barney got time That was when The stewards handed out clocks faster than Longine's could make them and Alby Beckett won another one with Tudor Mak Ted Sullivan also a POW won the Controversial Railway with Kilrickle when the stewards upheld the protest by Treenie against JJ on La Trice and Roy Edwards, protest took about 25 mins and max Simmonds in his laconic best said ladies and gentleman the protest has been UPHELD The joint erupted, I think Kilrickle then raced 3 days later in the Perth Cup 3200 Peter O'Loughlin ran 3rd then buttered up 3 days later in The Imperial stakes 2400 and won led all the way Tiger Moore must have been some horse that’s when the Perth carnival was run in 1 week at Xmas/New Year and the Seekers sang the Carnival is Over after the Perth Cup Day, and 500 people descended on The Ascot Inn      Snippers Ditch

Love Snippers Ditch, call--- Going there from Kalgoorlie as young fella the locals thought you owned a goldmine, you learnt quick that you lost at the races, Knowing Jack Halligan two-time world champion at pool, the amount jocks and strappers that believed they were heir apparent to Jack, as they handed the crayfish over, with  Jack saying you nearly had me then -----Under a triple hold.,

Correct on all 3 fronts with the mighty Kilrickle, all in a week. Ted became a "step uncle" to me when he married  my Auntie Sylvia McNair after Uncle Lew died very young. He was great bloke Ted, few better, and a very good trainer.
Was there on Railway Stakes Day, had backed Kilrickle and the  joint did indeed erupt and 50 odd years on, some of the surviving connections of La Trice are still erupting.

STG apart from Jack when he was in town, the Ascot housed some pretty good players with the stick. Was always easy enough to get a bet on a game.. Was a popular place to be from Thursday nights onwards. Had a great beer garden overlooking the river for a Sunday session

STG i had a beer on most Saturdays at the Carlisle years back when another goldfielder owned the place Johny Hinchcliffe . There was always a good school and on a lot of Saturdays Lurkey Halligan was at the table  real good bloke. By memory he was in the ownership of Moodometer a grey mare that won a lot of races Steve Wolfe trianed i think . A lot of those Saturdays become sundays mostly to the dismay of Hinchies Mrs.  The ascot remenber Gary Dennis  a trackwork rider Bruce Squiddy Morris big Ronny Grey all very very good with the cue  Saw j.Ricciardo  lose thousands on Saturday night at the Ascot playing pool. I think he was in the ownership of Maldivian the hores scratched at the barrier as favourite i think in the Victorian derby

Spinking ,Joe didnt mind spashing it about, his horse Maldivian was scratched from the Caulfield Cup reared and hit head on foreign bit of metal placed there to hold a microphone of some sort in place, was being touted a good thing before the race.
