Surprisingly the industry isn't upset that the Saturday meeting wasn't transferred to Monday or maybe the Albany (Sunday) meeting could have switched to Saturday with Ascot then occupying Sunday.
It appears turnover outweighs looking after industry.

If today had been the last day of the Pinnacles, which included Oliver's last day riding, does anyone believe that the powers that be, would not move heaven and earth to run the meeting?

The temperature is not expected to hit 40 until 1.00PM. According to predictions from the BOM, the temperature slowly builds to 38 by 12.00 pm.

They could have commenced the meeting at 9.00 run races every 30 minutes like we did last night at Cranbourne in Victoria, and finished at 1.00 PM.

This lack of foresight, is why Perth Racing is so far behind the rest of Australia.

If it was Ollies last day the meeting would have been transferred to Sunday and IMO the crowd would have been halved (Just my thought)
If today had started at 9.00am and half an hour between races ?
Again my opinion the crowd would have been between 300-500 people and 50% of those would most likely be owners, trainers, strappers etc and it would cost more to put on than it was worth. I was told by a knowledgable steward many years ago (about 10) that any race in Perth that commences before NOON has a dramatic fall in turnover
If I had a vote on what happened with the meeting I would have transferred to tomorrow. I go every Saturday and if the meeting today would have started at 9.00 I would have remained home
I don't think there is a "correct" answer to this heat problem and we just have to go with what they tell us is happening

i'll tell you whats wrong with the heat problem. since racing began here, circa late 1880's we have raced every saturday except when too wet. we have just started to call them off due to the heat. thats what perth has during summer...some very hot days.
the world is f*cked, we have become so bloody soft and weak, spoon fed utter rubbish (and believe it). how many of us can remember no air-con, boiling hot cars...we survived because we are/were resilient.
i gave up when they banned you for giving your child a smack. thats the problem, most of todays kids need the bullwhip.
in closing, sydney and brisbane have some extremely hot days. ever heard of their meetings being cancelled?

Can i ask an uneducated question? Are the horses we are breeding becoming softer/less resilient to heat? Everyone talks about “ tough colonial” breeds. What does that mean this day and age?

Leaving the would be child abuser commentary to one side, the solution is to install lights at either Belmont or Ascot and start the meeting at 5PM running the races every 30 mins

Saturday December 9th 2023 Sydney Airport reached 43.5°C. Randwick had 10 races that day from 12.25pm to 6.05pm. Randwick is only 6km from the Airport. That day it reached 40°C at Observatory Hill, also 6km from Randwick.

V_v, i think we are the ones becoming softer and less resilient, not only to the heat but to almost everything.
the horses..who knows but we know how tough horses are.

Agree that lights are required in a state as hot as ours and then the meeting would "most likely" go ahead. My question (not directly to you Damien) is how would the crowds go with night racing even if the meetings go ahead ? I have an opinion here that the first night meeting would attract somewhere between 6000-8000 people and be a bonanza, but last Saturday in Perth the first week after the new year we would have been lucky to attract 1000-1200 with a reasonably pleasant 33C. If we cannot get a crowd in the middle of the day to a race meeting I don't see anybody but the hardened racegoers (like myself) turning up

i am a member but have not been to ascot this season (except for a lunch at flying colors). there is absolutely no atmosphere, the bookies "ring" is silent..no calling the odds like when it was a "ring" under the plane trees. i understand eric wilson and buster no longer attend, in fact a lot of the old guard no longer attend.
add the price of a beer....no thanks...

As I said in my previous post, Perth racing totally lack foresight. The climate from December through to March in Perth, is ideal for night racing. I agree with Psycho that lights are needed at Ascot.

While, as he said, the first meeting would attract a bumper crowd, there is no doubt in my mind, that properly run, and advertised as a family friendly experience, a decent crowd would continue to turn up.

Have 8 races like Moonee Valley, starting at 6.15 with 30-minute intervals, and ending at 9.45.

Moonee Valley Friday night meetings still get decent crowds.

There are 24 BOOKIES working at the next one in February!

You would have 6- 8 there, if crowds were poor and they didn't think they could get a quid. At Cranbourne last night, there were 8, because that's all that are required to cater for the smaller crowd which attend.

Unfortunately, when you have highly paid muppets  in charge of a big business, the business will never achieve its true capabilities, and that's what you are confronted with in Perth.

I just do not get why lights weren't installed 20 years ago.

They'll have to do something to innovate soon, if not already too late.

Can someone with any knowledge about it who I doubt there would be many on here give a estimate on how much the lights would cost

Not too bad that day. 41% at 3pm. Perth Airport yesterday had 18% at 3pm.
The following day in Sydney (Dec 10th) the max temp was 20°C cooler but humidity was 96% at 9a.m!

Falcon it’s a thing called progress or evolution. How many new vehicles would be sold today if they didn’t have aircon and would you buy one that didn’t?
