Perth Cup Weights

West Australian Racing
I can’t work out why RWWA has a rating system when the handicapper doesn’t use it. If you owned one of eleven horses above a ninety rating in the cup you’d be happy. I know it’s a 61kg maximum but please

Have they handicapped to get Marocchino to run?

That camp said before the weekend they didn’t think they’d run.

If they don’t can they re-handicap?

Handicaps here are becoming a joke, they either re-introduce a 50kg minimum again or be harsher up your top.

  • Weights have got heavier no probs but handicap to their rating they’ve earned not penalise the ones on the minimum

The majority on the minimum should realistically have 48 kg ....

It's a 59kg Max top weight for Perth Cup isn't it?

61 kg maximum but that doesn't mean the handicapper has to give the topweight 61 kg.

The majority on the minimum realistically haven't earned their stripes to run in a $500,000 Group 2 race. There are plenty of ratings races they can run in without 'dumbing down' the Cup to accommodate them. Rate the race any lower, good horses won't aim for it and it will lose its Group 2 status.

Truly Great was given 60kg in 2020 but he was a 112 rater (Marocchino 109).

Has it always been a 90+? for 2020 it also mentions 98+ next to that number which is the rating the weights were allocated from.
    E.g Platoon was 100 = 54, Truly Great 112 = 60

The 2021 cup was 90+ but they worked with 94+ as the minimum

This year they don't mention the "different" rating their working off as yet(on CRIS anyway)but weight's have been calculated off a minimum rating of 97 as far as I can tell.
Only 14 horses rate 90 or better and close to 20 noms are just 72 or lower.
Why do they adjust this, surely there must be an explanation somewhere?
  • I think they call it the handicappers discretion

And variable dependent on the ratings of the nominated horses seemingly.

Top weight has had 59 last few years with Truly Great the exception because of his 112 rating.
  • On ratings topweight should have 62-5 kgs but a 61 kg max in the race ?

does anything happen with the weights if/when the toppy comes out?

group2.....better watch out it may beome a "Listed" race....which it deserves to be...

The reference on Cris to Metro-Listed (90+) is misleading. It's not part of the conditions of the Perth Cup. 90+ is the standard rating for a listed race. I don't know why Cris shows the Perth Cup as Metro-Listed (90+). It also shows the Railway as Metro-Listed (90+), yet that race was rated 99+ this year and about that every other year.

The Perth Cup is a Group 2 race. It has never been rated at 90+.  In recent years the Perth Cup has been rated at 94+, 98+, 97+ and 95+. There is absolutely nothing unusual in what the handicapper has done this year.

  • It says a 90 plus so he just makes it what he wants (discretion)

Completely agree.  There has been some talk about increasing the Perth Cup prize money to keep it relevant but I actually think if it was a $1million race this year the field would still be the same.  Basically I don’t think prizemoney can save it.

I just came up with an idea that perhaps could be a way to give it more relevance if it were possible.  Could they approach The MRC and do a deal to offer the Perth Cup winner ballot exemption into the Caulfield Cup?  Melbourne cup would be even better but I think that would be a pipe dream.   But either way that would get the attention of the Maher/Eustace and Wallers of the world who have endless horses looking to make those races they would be prepared to send over with that carrot.  Just a thought.

His name should be spoken. What this one person has done to Racing in this State is stunning.

The last 13 years have been a retardation of everything that was once good.

No amount of public relations and white washing of facts will ever change the legacy.
