Belmont 16/2/22

West Australian Racing
R1- THE COOLAKIN KING makes it to race day after three preparations of trials. He has looked a ready made racehorse at all of his trials when showing both good gate speed and be able to settle really well on speed. The form around him at trials is also very strong behind horses like Wuhan Warrior, The Velvet Queen, Hear Me Sing and Playz With Fire. His recent trial suggested a forward showing here on debut when deep throughout and finishing off okay under little pressure. Should take up a spot right over the speed and give cheek.

R2- SESSIONS PEAK is really closing in on a maiden win. Has sat over the speed in two high rating 1600m maidens at each of his last two and been good in running second at both. Two back loomed to go past Mr Brilliant in the straight before peaking with that galloper subsequently placing in a handy class one field. Last start sat leaders back and lost momentum at a vital stage before picking back up to finish strongly. Looks a race he’ll roll forward in again and may even find himself leading which prevents bad luck.

R3- CHAMPAGNE GAL does not win out of turn and is a small query at the trip but is going quite well at the moment. Would’ve almost won with any clear air three back, Sat three and four deep no cover two back and still found the line to be beaten only 2L by Speedbird in 58+ grade and last start finished off nicely from an impossible spot in a very high rating race that has already produced Yankee Lima (6L Geraldton winner). Very well placed into a 50+ here and if she can stay the extra trip she’ll run her honest race.

R4- Best Bet: NO DICE has returned to racing in super form. Had run some handy races in strong 2yo fields over Winter and trialled stylishly for her return. Bumped into a handy filly first up in Critical Altitude and beat her comfortably when putting herself in a spot and launching straight past her when asked to go. Second up was equally as impressive when matching motors with State Of Power the whole way up the straight when narrowly beaten but clearing out with 5L back to third. Should again find a nice spot and make herself hard to beat.

R5- RELIABLE CHOICE looks a promising Peters Investments filly. Has been freshened after having two runs to start her career. Didn’t get the best of luck on debut when having to keep going back closer and closer to the fence to get room and it still took a talented filly in Playz With Fire to run her down late. Start number two was much simpler when dropping out, coming to the outside and sprinting straight past them. Provided she can stay out of trouble she should go close to winning this on her way to better things.

R6- GINGER SENORITA had shown a return to form this campaign prior to be freshened. Returns here 62 days between runs in a race where she looks to get a very suitable map. Jumped fast first up before handing up to Yuna Mailman who really ran them along in what became a very high rating race with Ginger Senorita strong in second with margins to those back in the field. Also jumped straight to the front second up before finding three back fence and running midfield. This looks a race she can lead and back to 1200 fresh, she should give a good sight.

R7- ZOUDINI butters up for his fourth run in 21 days but backing the Smith team know what they’re doing. Was a strong first up winner in what has become a strong class one form reference before this string of runs started. At his last three he has run third behind Gallant Ranger, been luckless over 1200 and last start dropped back further to 1000m when failing out before flying home in 33.48 his last 600 to run fourth. Gets back up to 1300 here in a race where they’ll go a more modest tempo which helps.

R8- HE’S A LUCKY LAD looks a class above these. Returns from a freshen having had four starts prior that culminated in a second placing in Saturday grade over 2100. Was a dominant winner this track and distance first up although only in class one grade before being thrown in the Guineas when a definite pass mark and was a strong winner in a class three over 1650 third up. His recent trial was excellent when holding ground in a fast trial behind Panzdown. Looks one of the leading Derby chances at this stage.

R9- GROUND BRAKER had been building towards a win and was strong last start. That race was a high rating race and he was really good coming from three back fence to the outside and grabbing them late. Was having his first run at 1600 for the campaign and that looked to be the trick so an extra 50m here should only help. Gets back naturally so the outside gate isn’t a big hindrance and provided they can make ground he’ll just need a back to follow in running.

Not sure but Ballantyne has been training Olga Louisa for the last 4 years for the same owner.

I didn’t have a cent on so interested in hearing peoples thoughts- Did O’Donnell go too late on Darcele? Was deadset cruising and then asked the horse to sprint and was collared in that last race

In hindsight, he went too late. Trainer has stated it stays all day but is a bit one paced. They're having a laugh with Fletcher Road. Massive dump of cash late on the tote. Such a good thing they were prepared to take half the SP  :))
We'll get the usual bs in the stewards report. For once I'd like to hear something like.......we earmarked this race some time ago and just ran the horse to get its rating down. Once it got to 50, it was game on.
