Both I think and also a female stable hand . The name Natalie springs to mind. And my memory isn’t too flash either Rex . Reckon there is every chance you may have purchased a pair of Sunnies shoes or anything of Ace

If that Mad Mark ended up in Sydney at one point, I remember him. Almost jockey sized and mad as a cut snake.

They used to leave one or 2 tote windows open for the desperates hanging around after the races had finished as Perth would still be going. There were only a handful of regulars that stayed back. I was one of them of course.
My worst memory was giving a bloke 100-1 about a photo finish at Toowoomba. He couldn't put his dollar coin in my hand fast enough. A couple of minutes later it really hurt giving him his coin back + a grey nurse to go with it L-)

'The Maniac' Mark Ferguson...that's another long story. Working on it!
70's and 80's on Sydney racecourses were very interesting.
    Jail time in Perth.
Hard to track down information on his death though.

Stay tuned...many stories to come in the future!

The actual picture is that amyquil ---dempster colours? see the emperor's company fairplay logo-- Was perthracing  offices at  ascot  built for them after they handed over a block in the city. which was alleged  to be worth a fortune..Some of them deals would make  these bad boys look like choir boys in the scheme of things. if true.

i remember talking to ace about many subjects. it was over a few weeks at the hyde park hotel. all i'll say is that he was a very interesting guy. adrian was living somewhere around adelaide terrace way.
a few times he had a very pleasant lady with him, i think her name was donna.
the guy should have written a book...

I thought it was a good read, many low life get an easy pass by the general public because of their cavalier lifestyle, this shows that they shouldn't

Pretty sure Spinking just above got it 100% right, and those that know the penguin in the real don't rate him anywhere near what the casual observers do.

Might be an interesting story but was bloody hard to read.
As for the penguin, couldn’t agree more!

Ace was better known as a fence, would quite often have a boot load of stuff for sale, anything you wanted you, would just put in an order, he'd get it

while certainly not a fence p_b's post reminds me of "laurie the liqidator", what a character! i have his business card:
for fell off the truck prices
everything from a needle to an anchor
    gold nuggets, cultivated pearls
racehorse tips, consultations on broken marriages
you name it, we do it. if we haven't got it - we will get it.

i wonder where he is now?
