I watched a bit of the melbourne game yeterday. I thought the skill level had improved dramatically from what I saw last year.
    Give it time I reckon.

    have the dockers played yet??

I didn't watch the game but I think they might have played but only after half-time. They were down 34-0 at H/T, ended up losing 49-23 to the Bulldogs.

I'm just waiting for the first team to keep a "clean sheet". In the Brisbane v Adelaide game, Adelaide didn't manage to score in three of the four quarters.

Thanks Paul...I couldn't even be bothered doing a AFL search for the result....When are they going to learn to kick goals!!!
I watched a couple last year and it was the lack of scoring that annoyed me the most. The skills are ordinary, but the players were willing, so good contests from time to time, but that is all there was. I'll look out for a game or two and see if the skills or scoring have improved.

As for Freo.....its really good to see the girls following along behind their boys. ;-)

That's right, you can't knock the effort, but the low scoring and average skills does make it hard to watch.

To put things into some context regarding the scoring, AFL games are 4 x 20 min quarters (where the clock stops at every stoppage) as opposed to AFLW games which are 4 x 15 min quarters (where the clock only stops in the final two minutes of each quarter).

The average total score in an AFL game last year (207 games) was 178 points. The average total score from all AFLW games so far (33 games) is just 65 points.

I haven't watched many games of women's football to know if this was the norm. I looked at the 2007 WAWFL season and the average match totals were higher but I don't know how long these games went for. Also there were plenty of lop-sided games, mainly games against East Perth, who finished the season 0-14 and with a percentage of just 1.25%.

Saw the assistant coach of the AFLW Dockers team on TV last saying he is inspired by the girls going to training at 5.00pm after going to uni and their jobs during the day and the sacrifices they are making.
WTF.!!! Every player at every sport at every level does that on a daily basis.
Drive past any sports ground on a week night after five o'clock and see people training.
    Geez get some perspective mate.

Was hoping to join the other 50000 mugs at the Craypot Skillfest today to try and get a few more signatures for the Autograph book.....to go alongside Kevin Murray, Derek Chadwick Barry Cable and Graham Famer.. Not prepared to risk my personal safety on the Armadale train line or the uncertainty of finding I still have a vehicle or at least one with wheels still attached, even if I do make it back to the station in one piece. Pity really, was really looking forward to one of those delicious looking $12 buck fish burgers. Record crowd for a women's sporting contest .....serve up some onions with the tripe for this overhyped two dollar nonsense. Still, we have always got next weeks AFLXYZ to really see how Gil is progressing the peoples game.

In regards to the AFLW match today, 54,000 tickets were apparently sold, but just under 42,000 people turned up. So unless I'm missing something, around 12,000 were happy to pay the $2 (gold coin donation) to buy a ticket and not turn up than to actually go and watch an AFLW match. :-/

Cheers for the info Paul but I would rather watch multiple replays of the Upper Barnsley Underwater Knitting Championship than any Gil inspired hybrid mutilation of the game. They are claiming world records etc for a game of 6 goals to 4 goals and are saying it has heralded a new era in attacking football for the women's game. Just who do they think they are kidding? Of the 42,000 who went, how many were still there at three quarter time....the 12,000 that stayed away were the smart ones. It is sub standard garbage.

We are really starting to get this shoved down our throat now, every time you pick up paper turn on a radio TVs it's nearly at saturation point. Then again that is the only way they are going to keep it in the public eye.wonder how many would have turned out if it was at Fremantle oval or Subi

Watched a quarter of AFLW to get a feel on how the stadium looks and feels on tv for when the "real" footy starts.
The light and shade on the ground is nightmare for viewing.
The railing at ground level appears that the patrons are out of viewing on the close ups taking away from the crowd involvement. Maybe the afl don't like the look of patrons leaning over the fence giving advice to the opposition when kicking for goal.
The game itself is low standard and hard to watch. I was getting excited when a player actually kicked the ball 40m to clear the rugby scrums. Very rare to see unfortunately. Would love to see the handball to kick ratio. I reckon it would be 3 to 1 in favour of handball.
    Even Nat Fyfe sounded bored.
At 3 quarter time Mark Readings said to Nat "thanks for your time Nat." You could almost hear the door shut a millisecond after he said thanks for having me. Lol

Going by the AFLW Match Centre stats for the game, Freo had 193 disposals (124 kicks, 69 handballs), Collingwood had 222 disposals (146 kicks, 76 handballs). No mention of disposal efficiency but I'd be surprised if it was much over 50%. I only watched short snippets of the game during the overs breaks in the T20I and still had enough time to see multiple kicks in a row go straight to the opposition.

Surprised at the stats Paul. Probably highlights the lack of penetration with their kicking makes it look like a scrappy game.
There was a Collingwood 183cm ruckman/forward named Eliza Hynes who is the slowest athlete I have ever seen anywhere. Background is a volley baller. Speed obviously not a pre requisite in that sport. There in sums up the collection of mis fits that is AFLW.

Tip for opposition coaches/players - the girls have only one foot, ie they immediately go to the right to kick the ball - no left foot skills. The only exception being one or two natural left footers, so the opposite applies.

If you do watch (count me out), it is glaringly obvious.

Make what of that you will, just comes with not being professional and/or strong and/or long time players.

When a AFLW game has 7 goals kicked in it, it is deemed to be a high scoring game, so when one of the players manages it off their own boot, it's quite the surprise.

Bulldogs player Brooke Lochland kicked seven (7.3) in their 86-13 win over Carlton, a record highest score (12.14.86) and margin (73) in an AFLW game.

Carlton somehow didn't score in the first, second or final quarters, despite only losing the inside-50 count by 1 (29-30).

To put that into perspective, Brooke scored 45 on her off boot last night, Fremantle hasn't done that in any of their 11 AFLW games so far (highest score, 43 v GWS and Carlton, last year).

    ROUND 7
Fri 16/3 - GWS v BL, Blacktown ISP
Sat 17/3 - FRE v CAR, Fremantle Oval, 2:05 WST
Sat 17/3 - WB v MEL, VU Whitten Oval
Sun 18/3 - COL v ADE, Olympic Park Oval

Unless Collingwood lose big on Sunday, the loser of Fremantle v Carlton (at Freo Oval) will win the wooden spoon.

The other five sides are all mathematical chances of making the grand final, with only the winner of Bulldogs v Melbourne guaranteed one of the spots.

I read in yesterday's The West Australian that the Western Australian Amateur Football League (WAAFL), for the first time in its 96-year history, will be commencing their women's competition today, with fifteen different amateur clubs involved the across two grades.

Just to clarify, the story in the Football section yesterday related to plans by the WAFL to launch a six-team women's competition next year (with plans to expand it to all nine WAFL clubs within five years). In the final paragraph of that story, was the mention of the start of the inaugural women's WAAFL competition.

Currently, there is a stand-alone WAWFL competition, which according to their website, has been running since 1988, with Swan Districts having won four of the last five premierships.

As the inaugural A-grade game was played at Hillcrest Reserve, only a few minutes walk away from my joint, I thought I'd take my four legged friend down to the park and catch some of the game.

Very comparable to an AFLW game, similar skill level, mass congestion, low scoring and free entry.

The game was between Bayswater and Quinns District. With two minutes to go and Bayswater down by one point, 23-24, the game was stopped, for a head count (below). Bayswater had one too many on the field, forfeited their score to that point and lost 0-24. The stuff of folklore.

"Brand Fyfe" appeared on Brownlow night interviewing someone. WTF !!
No wonder his team mates can't stand him.
