That's right... it's not about winning or losing its how you play the game is what counts.

My interest in the trots is summed up by a comment from my then, 9yo daughter whilst watching Sky...

"Is this for the disabled jockeys Dad?"

Keep thinking that Skidman.....one day you will wake up and think " Why do Grant Williams Justin Warwick Lindsay Smith and Fred Kersley win all the good races".....just  keep backing the bounder trained horses....we harness boy followers get better prices that way.

Well ive actually got zero interest in the gallops

As for horsemanship - you look at Gai Waterhouse - a failed actress - who suddenly becomes a top line gallops trainer - whats needed - a few rich bastards - who are basically in it to get the ego kicked along

Then we were given all that frog **** - about the Cups winning trainer - timing the preparation to perfection - yet the overseas horses who havent had a run for 5 months donkey lick the locals - so much for horsemanship

As Kevin Newman once said - harness racing is about 5000 times more exciting than the gallops And anyone who has had a lifetime interest in it - if they buy a horse - their in it for the love of it - not the ego - and if their horse breaks even they will buy another one etc

And what really pukes me about the gallops - is that Gold Coast yearling sale - all the rich boys with their toys - id love an auditor from the ATO - to arrive their randomly  and have a surprise audit - and audit every single one of them - id love to see that happen

Bit touchy you blokes. Why dont you wonder why all those rich boys go to a standard bred sale?

There most certainly is Spinko....John Filardo is a fave of Richie Bells.....always mentions him in commentary....a nice battling guy who has two or three he starts mostly at GP midweek meetings.

Beat me too it Curmudgeon....I get aggravated when Richie takes the **** about Filardo in his commentary, I reckon its a form of long distance bullying under the guise of attempted humour. Don't know how many Richie has owned trained or driven but it's the G.Filardos of this world that actually are out there trying, yep, not much success, but trying, making a contribution, spending dollars, taking risks, backing their judgement, learning.....and couch dwellers who havent even been to a meeting, anywhere, for 30 years  treat them as free kicks......I am not talking constructive criticism, just low level pot shots.

Well said JJ. I have given Richie the benefit of the doubt on this one though. I would like to think it is an affection for the battler that has overtaken what may have originally been a bit of sarcasm by Richie. John Filardo keeps fronting up....good luck to him. I look forward to him getting a mention in the call now.....Richies quirky sense of humour leads him to this stuff in a more genuine fashion I think.

Ithink your giving him the benefit of the doubt - when ive heard it - i thought he  said in a smart aaarse type way - and the bloke would have been quite within his rights to make a complaint to the club

I could understand it - if he was keeping the breeze on 100 to 1 pops etc

And hes had a few winners - Beat The Heat at Northam - pretty good drive that - and you could see his elation in a screamer of a finish

I used to think that Marko and it possibly was/is true but John Filardo may have turned it around with tenacity and improved competence in the bike. Beat the Heat is one that he has got pacing pretty well now after other trainers had trouble with him previously.

Yep, fair enough Curmudge, don't want to knock Richie, thought his Freo Cup call was superb, I was down at Busso just listening and I felt like I was watching it. But it's just perceptions re Jonathon Filardo...hopefully your right and I am wrong. It's a bit like Reggie Phillips, put down for decades as an easy target....old Tanaka Eagle has thrown a lot of egg in a lot of faces. Believe it or not, Reg drove a couple of winners for us down in Albany late 70's when ....and I'm being honest here, we couldn't get anyone else. Won two in a row in fact. we were happy, Reg was happier!!!

As it continues to rain - pelt down - and am i sick of it

But who was the driver - he was very young at the time - who used to drive a horse by the name of Snakes and Ladders - he had that horse and another good one - and he used to drive them with aplomb

He was a likeable - happy go lucky sort of bloke

    Ernie Smith?

I'm not a fan of Richie's calling. To me he is boring as bat shittt. I hate when he fills in for Dmac on Saturdays. Dmac makes more mistakes than any other caller in the country. But at least he has some excitement in his call. Give me Matty Young anyday.

I agree Smith rings a bell - but Ernie doesnt - i can even remember his colours - they were a dazzling blue - hed allways have a big group of family or supporters around his horse

He won a race  at Richmond Raceway one night - he was up in that birdcage / parade ring - grassed area - he was very polite - hed tell you about his horse
