Not much shade where the jockeys weighed in those days! Several of them could ride at 48kg too. If a horse carried 54kg...that was commencing to get into the heavy factor.

When said some hoops answered in a friendly manner, some with humour and some stony faced - that was in relation to the three or four punters that were always in the area asking the jockeys ' any chance Rod' ( Staples ) or 'any hope Kenny' ( Bradley ) so on , so on.

Recall one day final race, big field they asked Rod Kemp...he replied ' yes a place ' ...he was riding a horse named Spinola..that was good enough for me..put the whole kaboodle on a drum...true to Kemps word, Spinola - third.

Riders I used to valey for one of the blokes you mentioned above . Back then if they ran in the first 3 and had to weigh in we used to go down and collect there saddle in that weighing in area and walk back up to the jockeys room. one day while walking back up there with the jockey in question, a old bloke stuck his head over the fence and give the jock a spray. I will never forget what happened next , jockey went over to the old bloke and said what did you lode your $1.50 mate meet me outside the room after the last and I will give it back to you as long as you go buy some new teeth with it . the old bloke had a mouthful of very worn rotten ones

Yes some good banter between punter and jockey Spinking both returning serve.

One punter use to get up on one of those old iron chairs in the Ascot ledger....binoculars fixed on..and guarantee every single race he called out three words to other punters around him...'the favourite's gone!' Always around the 600 metre mark haha. But he never missed...couldn't have been a favourite win back then! Gosh he was funny.

Maybe wrong but think it was a very good jockey in Keith Moxham who found it difficult to get under 54kgs...he became the first heavy weight jockey i can remember . Now 54 is almost light!

Frank Treen also may have got a bit heavy too. These guys were at the end of their career when had just begun to follow...but recall their names very well.

Glen 'the ant' Davies often rode at 46kgs. Ken Bradley another - we ( young punters ) thought nothing of it. Harry Wulff think he was light too and probably rode at 46 or 48. Lindsay Rudland another.

There were some pretty handy horses in the field that year. Besides the winner Runyon there was Think Big who had just won the Melbourne Cup and would win it again in 75. Battle Heights who had just won the Cox Plate and would win the Sydney cup in 75.Haymaker had just won the Victorian and Australian Derbies and Taras Bulba who had won the AJC Derby, was 2nd in the Cox Plate and 2nd in the Australian Derby.

I'm not sure how big the crowd was in 1975 but as a guide an estimated 45000 were at the track when Dayana won the Cup in 1973 and Perth would have had a population then of about a 1/3 of what it has today.

As kids we use to call Tom Little...'little Tommy Little' haha not very original.

Phil Davison is an interesting one - do recall the name. Barry Smith - yes but I'd forgotten him too. Rod Staples being the father of winning Railway Stakes hoop Craig. Norm Coombe had a son ride too that was Craig as well.

Gerry Donnely would have been the youngest out of those hoops.

Peter Moran was very good. Ross Cherry too. Webster Jnr ..now is that Asian Beau's hoop ? Get the Websters mixed up sometimes!

Gerry Donnely may have ridden for Len Pike and Roy Edwards ? Think Harry Wullf may have done some riding for Len Pike too. Or David Brosnan for Roy Edwards. Prolific winning trainer of 2 year olds.

Yes that's right Spinking and don't forget that was the Australian Derby the absolute cream...the WA Derby also a terrific race had been run two or three weeks previously.

Recall a very good WA horse winning both ( no meant effort ) his name was Joindre. Tough as old boots he was, could kick on like old boots too.

Speaking of old think it was the 1983 WA Derby won by Kevin Forrester on Old Currency...he's still riding!!

The eastern seaboard was that jealous of WA having two derbies...the Australian Derby whoever thought that up here deserves a medal!

How lucky were we to have two classy three year old races over 2400 packed with local talent and the best the eastern states could send.

A lot of the eastern staters had already run in the VRC Derby at Flemington - so what - soft as butter these days haha.

For sure Spinking I'm thinking Webster Jnr is Webster snr haha I recall the Websters riding all very well. There was a 'big bad' Ron Webster at my East Perth in the WAFL back around then too. Websters a plentiful.

Recall a horse named Lashes - he was handy - thinkingTed Martinovich.

A good two year old can recall Snugglepot - possibly Roy Edwards.

Queen Inca was a grey horse ?

Detonator would carry 61-65 when the minimum was 46-48. Can anybody else see how top weights ( Pounamu - Material Man ) are in today compared to yesterday.
  • thefalconthefalcon    20,485 posts
bet u can recall some other "lashes" too, riders..... :P :-O [-X

As good as Luckygray was and he was outstanding...the difference between Detonator and Luckygray is even though they both lugged big imposts in weight ( both terrific ) when Detonator was in full swing he had to give some handy horses down the bottom anywhere between 10-15 kgs - now that's a lot of kegs!

Recall being on a very good horse named Micron for a drum in a Railway Stakes..think Dale Short from Victoria rode him - he snuck third place - but he only carried about 48kgs - as good a horse as he was he wasn't in the same ball park as Detonator or Luckygray - but today he would be getting far less weight off a Luckygray than he received from a horse like Detonator.

I was in the sauna with Peter O'loghlen  at Chris Yaksich's sauna in Meltham the morning he won the Perth cup on Fairs print (only as company) and he was struggling to get the last few ounces off. It was getting late and he sent me home to his house in Rivervale to collect his race gear and stayed in the sauna by himself. When I returned to take him to the races I found him out cold. There was a cold bath that you would get into after sweating to revive your self after sweating so I dragged him into the bath. He responded and went to the races and won the cup. He led for most of the cup but Glen Davies took him on around the half mile on Rack and Ruin and said to Peter to follow him back to the winners stall. History tells that Fairs Print fought back in the straight to beat Rack and Ruin. After the sauna in the morning it is a wonder he could even get on the horse. He was a top rider with his career cut short by a fatal road accident with Ross Cherry at the young age of 33. They were on there way to Bunbury to work Ches Felix in his final gallop for the Perth cup.

^^Wow. Para that deserves its own title thread. Everybody should have a read. Couldn't agree more with him.

'Brand' is another ridiculous overused convuluted term these days.

'Product' yes remember Local Product very well he was a great horse ( pacer ) trained by Fred Kersley. The only brand am interested in is the best cereal brand.

Long before Sky was it channel 9 in the seventies that used to show a replay (maybe from the turn only) of perhaps all races but certainly the last two (Daily Double) and it was sponsored by (Update your car at....) Kevin Dennis?

Yeah great article riders. I saw it on twitter as a jockey shared it. I too thought it should have its own thread but my phone was stuffing around and it was not working for me. I too hope everyone has a read. Happy for you to post it in its own right, with its own thread.

I would Para but technical skills not too good doing that...but if somebody else could...think it's worth it.

Channel 9 at one stage for sure did do the daily double...can still see the presenters face...he was on Channel 9 news for ages reading the sport...was his surname Walker ? ...just can't remember now..always enthusiastic.

Channel 2 news every Saturday night 7.20pm...Max Simmonds reviewed every race and think it was from about the 300 metre mark..was just after they straightened..was in a slowish motion, and he would sort of call each race again.

Easy to listen to - a sincere smile and a great job he did on it.

Of course it's not required now..but back then it was priceless.
