Unfortunately the website doesn't have the 1997 winner Time Frame's colours listed.
    Time Frame's owners were G. M. Ward & G. R. Ball. Any thoughts?

I thought the Smiths owned it as well maybe it was leased
Time Frame's owners on Cup Day were shown in the book as Mrs Angela Smith & M J Smith.  Colours were purple, white stripes, pink cap, same as today.

On my blog I have R. Tucker as the trainer and D. Rudland as the rider but I have no details of who owned Golden Centre.

Not sure. The names G. M. Ward & G R. Ball ring a bell though. I think they may have owned it when it won the Sires Produce for Fred Kersley as a 2 yo.

There's a photo of Golden Centre's Cup win on the wall in the entry to the Belmont Committee Room - might mention owners. Apparently he beat Reckless!!!

I see that 1978 cup trophy's for sale with the Horseman's Bookshop. Anyone got $11k to spare? Apparently it's the last one done completely in gold.

Didn't Len Morton train Muros ?? Do it win a Brisbane Cup
  • Vo_RogueVo_Rogue    36 posts
I have F M Gammon as Muros's trainer for the Perth Cup and on my Brisbane Cup blog page I have L B Morton as trainer. Len Morton also trained Muros when he finished second to Hyperno in the Adelaide Cup.

Muros (D Brosnan) ran 2nd to Golden Centre.
My late father rode Golden Centre in the Cox stakes before the cup, declared it unbeatable in the cup after that run, Jacky Boyle and a heap of stablehands from Ascot got wages that would have lasted months

How about Reckless..the proceeding 8 months he won the Sydney Cup , Adelaide Cup and Brisbane Cup then runner up in the Melbourne Cup, backs up again in the Perth Cup and runs 3rd. Five runs over the 3200 metres in 8 months for 3 victories and 2 placings. Only horse to have ever won the Sydney Cup, Adelaide Cup and Brisbane Cup in the same year.

    Thanks again Piston,
Is it correct that Rendition's colours (P. Watson) were white, blue checks, white sleeves & cap?

When Reckless came over for the cup in 78 ,he stayed at the stables of the turnballs. They used to be behind the old Rowlands  stockfeeds on the highway corner of Carbine street. On the sunday they had a barbecue to which my parents were invited I was only about 12 years old , remember old Tommy Woodcock, and me being told this gentlemanly old fella was the strapper of the great one . everyone was making a fuss over Reckless I reckon no horse in history had more carrots fed to him that day by the wifes and kids that were there

Was a sad end to old Reckless's career when he broke down in the '78 Cup. I remember reading Pat Trotter saying that he felt Reckless falter about 1000m from home and it was only his will to win that kept him going.
Some wonderful stories have been written about Tommy & Reckless, a gentleman and a gentle horse.
Reckless sired quite a few winners at stud too.

Took a pretty good one in Gold And Black with the Cummings polish to beat Reckless in the Melbourne Cup. May have been a bit of a wet Cup that year. Think some bolter ran 3rd!

Think the jockeys rode in the flag colours of there country of origin thereby confusing race callers and punters a bit. Was foreign at the time for horses to be carrying the new colours with jockeys racing out of their normal silks. Saddlecloth numbers were a lot smaller then too.

Reminds me of great days in the leger..or if my father was lucky to come into free tickets to go 'inside' as he called it.. would mean a change of clothes from t-shirt, shorts and thongs to getting 'dressed up' in long sleeved shirt , trousers and shoes! He was adamant about that. The enclosure or 'inside' was a whole new world..it was 'posh'. Free tickets were like gold. Possibly why I still push for free admission today.
