Perth Cup History

West Australian Racing

Hi, I’m seeking the
help of the knowledgable minds on this forum in regards to some results of the
Perth Cup.

I have a racing
blog titled ‘The Colours Of Horse Racing’

In this blog I
have the full results of 23 Gr1 races including the Melbourne, Caulfield,
Australian, Brisbane, Sydney & Adelaide Cups.

I include a
coloured facsimile of the winning colours of every winner of the 23 races on my
blog. Each race covers from present day back to the first running of every
race.

I have spent
many hundreds of hours researching old newspapers as well as many old racebooks
that I’ve scanned from ebay to get all the information that I require.

At the moment
I’m doing the last of my ‘Cup’ races, the Perth Cup and have hit a big hurdle
with some of the information needed to complete the results of some of the Cup
races.

The main problem
centres around the years 1955 to 1970.

I have managed
to find bits and pieces of information on most of these races but am still
missing some crucial info like number of starters, SP, barriers, margins,
owners & colours.

Although the Perth
Cup page is not complete, I’ve put it on my blog and will leave it there for a
week so that you can see what information I need.

I have marked
the missing information with ‘X’.

I know I won’t
get this race as complete as I’ve managed to get the other races on my blog,
but any information that you can supply me with will be very helpful and much
appreciated.

I’d like to get
the Perth Cup complete enough to add to my blog permanently and hopefully you
guys can help me achieve that.

Thanks

from memory there was the private track Helena Vale Racecourse from the 1890's to the 1960's so you've done very well compiling the information you have , also remember something about PR or back then the WATC either throwing out or losing alot of the memorabilia/records when moving from Helena vale or Ascot to Belmont or vis versa as above you done extremely well to compile the data you have with little historical data available

Your namesake @Vo Rogue as you would know won the Group 1 Winfield Classic here at Ascot in the late 80s..one of his many fantastic Group 1 victories. The race now known as the Kingston Town. Had several name changes that great race. Western Mail Classic , Marlboro 50000 , Fruit and Veg are a few that come to mind. When champion horses are mentioned that have raced and won in Perth Vo Rogue is a little bit forgotten but he was a champion in every sense of the word.

Most of the information that I've compiled has been sourced from the Trove Newspaper site. Their collection of state newspapers starts from the early to mid 1800s and finishes at 1954.That's why there is such a gap in my information from 1954 to 1970. From 1970 on, the Melbourne Age & Sydney Morning Herald pages on Google featured the full results of the Perth Cup .

Yes I remember well Vo Rogue's Winfield Classic win, Cyril Small wore the red & white colours of Winfield cigarettes rather than his famous brown and white livery. Its a pity that the race isn't on YouTube as I'd love to see it.

Its also a pity that the great eastern state champions don't travel to the west at carnival time any more, I remember Cummings, Smith, Hayes etc bringing their best to the west for the great prize-money on offer in those days. You guys even got to see Kingston Town record a courageous win the Western Mail Classic. That was really something!

I think we will be getting Waller come back year upon year after last years railway result. He just proved that you don't have to have a top level eastern states horse to win a G1 over here. Hopefully the others big trainers take note and follow him over as well.

One of the horses who's colours I'm missing is the 1974 Perth Cup winner, Allegation.
Allegation was owned by  a well known Perth bookmaker and city councillor, Rod Evans.
Punters gave both horse and jockey a very hostile reception after the race with punters lining the fences to boo and jeer the pair as they returned to scale. Allegation had been a strong second favourite for the Cup before being beaten into third place behind Fade in the C B Cox Stakes the  Wednesday before the Cup when a 4/9 favourite. He blew-out to 12/1 on Perth Cup day before late money saw him firm to 10/1 at the jump. Does anyone know Rod Evans Colours? does he still race horses in WA? Is he still alive?

Think Rod Evans horses may have raced in the red with black and white stars...but the Falcon will know. Kabooki for jockey Tom Graham ran second. Was just a kid in the old leger but you could hear the boos and jeers clearly. Falcon was cheering apparently! Mr. Evans no longer with us.

The day that bugger Glastonbury won the Metropolitan Handicap in Sydney was another beauty of a demonstration. Think he ran stone last as a favoured runner at his previous run. Then comes out and wins the Metrop at double figures then next effort finishes a mile back in the Melbourne Cup. Demonstrations on track were something to be seen and not a bad thing.

spot on with the colours rider...Peter Knuckey, his nephew, uses them as his trial colours.

Lindsay Rudland rode Allegation. we finished back at Alan Bonds place after the cup. I was was just over legal drinking age...:)

bit of drama that night, Alans daughter jumped from the first floor balcony onto her mothers Jensen, u should have seen the back windscreen. the girl was OK.

bloody hell, I could tell some stories....

Had a stayer called Diehard too. He had his moments Diehard but was a bit of a deceiver. Black with white stars and red sleeves sounds just about right for Rod Evans colours.

He has a community centre named after him in the city

Yes was a well known identity that's for sure especially in the East Perth , Highgate area. A good bookmaker as well. Took some big boys on.

Remember having a bet on a photo finish result with Mr. Evans..the days when photos took quite a bit longer to be decided upon..the magnifying glass could be used for up to 10 minutes or more...bookmakers would bet on the photo result...and there would be some decent sized bets...anyway I backed the horse and the clerk accidentally gave inflated odds..and Mr. Evans filled out the ticket before realising the odds were too much...would have been happy for him to cancel however he honoured the ticket to the full value...but his clerk took the full force of his wrath. He was wild with him. Managed to get that photo correct ,got one or 2 wrong though. They were not always as easy as they looked as we still know.

Thanks for that. I managed to find Regal Rebecca on a racehorse owners website that also lists the owners colours
Owners: Ms D. A. Evans & Mrs H. H. Gregson - Black, white stars, red sleeves, white cap.
Would seem that Rod's daughter has kept tradition with his racing colours.
I've put those colours on my blog. Thanks heaps.

Unfortunately the website doesn't have the 1997 winner Time Frame's colours listed.
    Time Frame's owners were G. M. Ward & G. R. Ball. Any thoughts?

rod use to name a lot of his horses after mates & family....carlton cavalier (jack sheedy), golden greek (tony zempalis), little Roderick (his son), debra anne (his daughter), lady veronica (his wife), typhoon tracey (his daughter).

Debbie lives in Melbourne, she is married to joe Throsby. I think joe owned encosta de largo.

Time Frames colours would be white with purple stripes...the livery of angela smith

I used to visit rod in his office above the carlton. he had a board on the wall containing bounced cheques.....some very interesting names.... ;))

    Time frame A.Smiths current Colours
Having a guess Lintonmarc Blue white sleeves

Pretty sure Bernie Ryan would be one who could help information, and a possibly Piston Broke could help on a couple

lintonmarc?  wasn't it eric parnhams colours? green comes to mind... :-?
  • Vo_RogueVo_Rogue    36 posts
The 1967 winner Special Reward was trained by Eric Parnham.
Her colours were green pale blue sleeves & cap
Did all Parnham trained gallopers carry the trainers colours and not the owners?

Time Frames colours Purple & White stripes &
    Pink cap

  • thefalconthefalcon    20,485 posts

    Thanks for the information.
I found some photos of Angela Smith trained horses, all carrying the purple & white stripes, purple sleeves & pink cap. Will put it on my blog.

One Perth Cup that stands out is a horse punters started specking several weeks before the Cup..smart money came for a horse with the slightly unusual name of Linc The Leopard. He got the chocolates for trainer Wally Mitchell.
  • Vo_RogueVo_Rogue    36 posts
The trainer A. H. Jordan went alright in the late 50s early 60s.
    Trained 4 Cup winners between 1958 &1965.

As a young bloke going to the track..Albert Jordan was a living legend..great to listen to as well. Backed a horse a place one Saturday named Red Storm having its second start in a race after finishing 8th at its debut..paid $25.80 a place and that was for 50 cents! $51.60 for the full unit. Fairly sure Albert Jordan trained Red Storm. No doubt I've given the $25.80 back plus some.

Good ole AB, he was the one that got George Way involved in  the game and taught him a few tricks that you could get away with in those days.
