Digger's Cup Meeting

West Australian Racing
I have no idea how many attended today but it appears there was a poor attendance. Very sad really.

Before I comment further I should declare that I have rarely missed this meeting but unfortunately serious commitments prevented me from attending today.

I and I am certain others like Falcon would have very fond memories of Digger's Cup meetings. They were akin to a country race meeting. Country standard horse racing in town. For me it was a tradition to attend this annual meeting and it was always one of the most enjoyable (long) days of the year. The day was always well attended. Sadly it is just another one of those days on the racing calendar that does not attract the public attendance it deserves and apart from all the others this is the day that deserves the support.

Maybe if the meeting was on Anzac Day itself that'd be a good start, would be a good day out for the diggers and those involved in the Anzac Day celebrations.. Dawn service, breakfast then onto the races for the day etc etc

I remember the diggers cup day well...WHEN it was held on the 25th. large crowd full of old diggers bedecked in medals, families, bands, bagpipes.

I think we are the ONLY state who  does not have  a metro. meeting tomorrow, the joint is well and  truly on the slide to obscurity. those pics from yesterday are embarrassing.

I think each post so far on this subject matter is totally correct.

The Diggers Cup meeting should be held on Anzac Day. There should be an Anzac Day meeting held in the metropolitan area.

The trouble is administrators look for ways to save money by not running the meeting on the 25th and that is an absolute disgrace in itself. It is a slap in the face to the men, women and horses who fought to make this country a great place to live.

I read a post yesterday about Anzac Day and it filled me with sadness how the racing industry has deteriorated in that Anzac Day is now a forgotten race day. It is shameful on those that purport to be racing enthusiasts who are in positions of power.

Fancy having a service on the 23rd. Two days before Australia's greatest acknowledgement day. Perth Racing & RWWA need to get up with the attitude of society and implement Anzac Day racing in the metropolitan area. Society is showing great respect to Anzac Day. Racing should as well.

Kalgoorlie do it well. Perth Racing is being shown up by a country club.

Pinjarra are racing on Anzac Day but aren't allowed to run a Diggers Cup. What is going on? Where is the common sense!!!

I think we all need to pursue every avenue to get change. I spoke to Diva this morning and he said the crowd at Ascot was terrible yesterday.

If we race on each Anzac Day, make something of it. It should be a massive celebration to all of those that fought for Australia. Make it a patriotic day. Don't look for reasons not to hold it because of wages. It should be a day whereby the racing industry gives back to the community. Have flags flying. Be proud of our heritage. Create a big bold service and put those who fought for this country on center stage. They are our heroes.

For once forget about fashion, glamour, social media, pop ups and this and that. Get back to reality. Make it a day at the races for the diggers, their families the veterans and their families and families in general. Don't for Christ sake charge an entrance fee.

Racing should be proud to celebrate Anzac Day. At the moment it appears Perth Racing are trying to avoid it.

That is the wrong attitude. Embrace our history. Celebrate what we have. We need to be patriotic.

Perth Racing could show the way. Lets see if their leaders can work hand in hand with RWWA to make this work.

It is unacceptable to find a reason why it cant work. If anyone says it cant work then they are not true blue dinky di Aussies.

Top post it is very sad to see. Just maybe if they embraced Anzac Day metro meeting they would get the extra costs back tenfold!!

Great post SP. i agree, there is a time and a place where you have to put respect before the bottom line and and time and a half wages. Huge slap in the face to the community.

Was at the races yesterday, the crowd was pathetic as was the state of the track. It is all doom and gloom at the moment.
I can't believe they AGAIN left the sprinklers on overnight one day during the week near the 600-400m mark on top of the rain we had.
Makes me wonder why I'm in this game, when they cannot even get the basic's right
Went to the terrace rest. Yesterday waked out at 1.45 food would have been better at the local pub

Are they allowed to have two up at the races on Anzac Day( if they were to have a meet)? Or would Packer have a whinge?

Seems to me they are totally misreading the sentiment of the community ...just got back from the Dawn Service in Manjimup. Gotta love the people of Manjimup....a shocker of a morning, absolutely belted down with rain all night and throughout the outdoor service, and many hundreds (600 to 800 people) braved the conditions, young and not so young, and then a fantastic free (gold coin donation) gunfire brekky at the RSL Club for all comers ...and if two ups your game, rock up after the 11.00am march and service. Wouldn't take much imagination to really promote A Diggers Cup Race meet with trimmings on Anzac Day...horses and horseman played a major, major roll in many of the early wars.

I went to the dawn service at North Beach.

Kevin Bloody Wilson sang a version of "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda".

Wow, it was so touching. Sung beautifully and for those few minutes I wept with pride.

I know the filthy do-gooders are trying to eliminate Easter. If they ever try to eliminate Anzac Day they should be found guilty of treason and put to death. This attitude is contrary to what we remember on this day but one must never forget.

    Proud to be Australian.

ANZAC at Axford Park today was well attended... sideways rain for most of it. Mayor John Carey impresses me.
on another note, sad that the ceremony at Currumbin, known for its light horse parade on the beach, is being cut back next year due to the cost.
Such a shame... the races would be a great place (on ANZAC Day) to do a parade or even a gallop up the straight of the light horse.
If PR wants to do it... they need to do it well, have a point of difference and most importantly, do it on ANZAC day.
Doing it two days before just has no interest for most people, who would rather commemorate on the actual day.
