Yes, Burgess Queen - sensational looker as well. Brosnan?

And Blue Nucleus - owned up in Kalgoorlie - Lionel Woodward???? Or is my memory playing tricks.

Venetian Queen - the original mare was a champ. There is another Venetian Queen currently going around somewhere.

Already mentioned Burgess Queen, great filly.

Special Test was a very good stayer won Kalgoorlie Cup, Geelong Cup etc and numerous other feature staying events here in Perth, think Wally Hannah owned him, Sky Filou, Burgess Queen. What some of Albert Jordan's champions Maniana I know of from my gandfather talking about her but I'm sure of the older people on here could name quite a few others, Belinda's Star was a great sprinter of the 70's.

Sanatate WA's first winner of the Australian Derby and versatile enough to win a Railway Stakes first up he was a very good horse.

Old Fashion was a brilliant sprinter/miler who won just about every decent sprint race here including the railway, Hyperion, asian beau, RJ Peters Bunbury stakes, and the challenge, fairetha and belgravia as a 3yo and was placed numerous times in quality sprints.

Come to think of it fairetha would be another one from what I've read that would have to belong on that list.

    Fairetha mentioned earlier as well.

Anyone remember Hula Star ridden by Harry Wulff no champ but a nice welter horse, I used to love the name and the way it raced when I was a young kid, it used to come home with a barnstorming finishing burst.
  • JayJayJayJay    8,624 posts
Yes, remember it well. not quite up to the quality mentioned here but a quality galloper. There were lots of godd "welter horses" in those days. Usually the last race of the day and great contests. Action Station one of my favorites of that era, a grand old campaigner. They seemed to race on a lot longer in those days.

Loved King Of Saxony backed him in the cup when SJ rode him, looked stunning in the yard that day but an all time great?

Dual's Brute injury plagued superstar that would have been anything if sound is still one of the biggest runs I've ever seen in when wide throughout in arguably the best ever Railway won by Better Loosen Up with the former Railway winner and Caulfield Guineas winner Marwong splitting them.

Tudor Mak, Latin Saint and Alpine Wind who were all great horses of their time, another outstanding stayer would be Regimental Honour who was a top horse over many seasons.

Old Role a very very good horse, Kingston Town winner, 2nd in the doncaster beaten by Soho Square who carried just 47.5kg with Paddy Payne up.

Lords Ransom as good a stayer as I've seen here since Moss Kingdom,
whose career was destroyed by injury and being assassinated by Danny
O'Brien but still bounced back to win the Perth Cup.

He was luckless first up in the Railway and should have definitely run a place
and maybe even gone close I was on at the 50's plus for the national
debt and still won Bunbury Cups, Pinjarra Cups etc, etc.

At his peak he was as explosive a stayer as we've seen here for a very long time.

Singing The Blues, an exceptionally good short course sprinter not quite in the Placid Ark class and its Ark with a K not a C but then again not many were in the same street as the Ark.
Also my mistake Gilt Patten has no r in it.

Going back a long time, Lord Treat (J.Armanasco) was a top top horse (1946). Versatile? Well a 2nd in the Railway, a 3rd in the Perth Cup and then he wins the Imperial Stakes - all with weight and all within 3 weeks. I think he went East after getting huge weights in the Easter Mile and the Easter Cup

    All Legal - Colin France

Didn't think anyone would remember All Legal. From memory he won the Belmont Newmarket over 1200m on a Saturday then the open handicap over 2000m on the public holiday Monday lumping big weights in both. Despite winning over 2000m was best over 1200m. Always carried big weights and was top weight or close to in 2 or 3  Railways.

You rating Lords Ransom highly. Was he really that good? In the top 50 WA Horses of All Time?

All Legal was a great campaigner - won a 5 furlong dash with about 9 stone 12 - I think apprentice J. McNair took a few pound off. Seem to remember he broke 59 seconds for the dash which was really something in those days. Trained by Colin France down Rockingham way.

Fimiston a shocking omission by all of us.

All Legal I agree was a very good horse as was the classy and versatile Indian Shell who either won or was placed in every decent race going around whether by sprint or distance events and judging by the record books
Big Bob was some sort of horse, an amazing record.

    Rare Sovereign was a brilliant 2 & 3 year-old.
  • JayJayJayJay    8,624 posts
Yes, I thought of Big Bob and Tiger Moore today. Would Jenark and Royal Coral be worthy of honorable mention?
And Fimiston for Alan Hawke, top class.
