Three year old Commands filly, Night Train, returns to racing tomorrow at Belmont Park after an impressive trial last Monday where she showed a blistering turn of foot to cover her rivals easily.

The Darren McAulliffe trained filly has been to the races just once, last year in a 1100m 2yo handicap, where she had to be dragged back to last from her wide gate, was held up in the straight and rattled home to finish just behind Master Panon in a closing sectional of 34.05 seconds.

Her trial over 1000m on September 3 demonstrated she had a "go" button, O'Donnell sitting back and wide before asking her for an effort and she covered the field with ease in a few short strides.

She could be yet another talented three year old to emerge out of the Belmont Park season alongside Jestpatim, The Rising and Grey Cheval.

5 runners ? Is everyone hanging off until Ascot or something ? Last years 2YO's were an ordinary bunch, I hope this isn't a sign of things to come for the 3YO year.

In recent times which year did you consider to be strong 2 year olds Damien?

Perhaps Luke's Luck may go on, but the rest of the 2yo's looked to be the best of a weak bunch. Not much depth is what I am saying, nothing of dominance.
  • TheDivaTheDiva    13,248 posts
Keeper quiet was unlucky not to win the karrakatta and the sires.....she's got to be up there surely?
  • Sounds a bit like Damo's Scenic Shot comments a few years back. How did it go, ' nothing more than an all expenses paid junket taking this horse east'.
Come on Damo Messara, LL may go on with it, but those behind it were a weak bunch ?

Its not worth the public discussion.

A lot of what will be the best 3yo's most likely didn't even race as 2yo's.
Also history shows that there's a good chance that several of the ones had more than a few starts won't come back as good.
Wrt the depth of fields atm, well it's a bit early for the ones on Champ Fillies/Guineas campaigns to have resumed. Just like the Railway prep horses. That should change in the next 2-4 weeks
  • Been told that because of the ratings scale, some of the better performed 2yo's of last season will go two trials and straight to the Belgravia.
Better than getting 60 to 62 kg in a race prior.

Thought they'd be ok in the 64+ races and claim if need be, apart from Luke's Luck of course. Makes sense for him to return in the Belgravia

Can I ask this to everyone then. Which of the last few years was not an 'ordinary' 2 year old bunch here in Perth?

Last year's winner of the Karrakatta Plate / Sires Produce double, Luke's Luck, is being talked about as a potential stallion prospect. I did a search through the last 20 years and only Umah stood as a stallion. Unfortunately he wasn't much of a hit only seeing a total of 91 mares in a ten season career and never threw a stakes winner.

2008 was an interesting batch of 2 year olds. Not sure they were en masse that great after their 2 year old years.

    Grand Nirvana - Star
Brava Fortune- Never won another race after her 2 year old year
Pegase- Never raced again in Australia after his 2 year old year.
Amelia's Reason- After 2 year old season won a 68-80 race and a 54-64 in Bunbury
Sheenasaidgrey- Won a 3 year old 1500 race, a 74-86 race and a third in the Roma Cup
Cassandara Shadow- Won 2 3 year old races and The Oaks
Liquidation- Never won as a 2year old. Won 2 3YO races a 74-86 race and the sprint in Broome
    Russell Road- Won 1 3YO race then a 57-68 a 62-74 and another 62-74.

    2007

    Scenic Blast - Superstar
Roman Time - won 1 race after his 2 year old season
Jestatune - Won 1 race after 2YO season
  • FoolsGoldFoolsGold    148 posts
    2004

Redwoldt - Never won another race after 2
Refemme- Won 2 races after 2
    Covertly- Star
Wild Target- Won 9 races after 2 inc Northam sprint. Clearly a very good galloper.
Metaldale- After 2YO season Won 3 3YO races and then a 3 metro Win race

I think that Luke's Luck, Keeper Quiet, Miss Solis, Darlington Abbey, Jestpatim, Hard Ball Get have a good chance of producing similar numbers to those I have listed above. Whether there is another at the elite level like Grand Nirvana, Scenic Blast or Covertly only time will tell.

Pegase had one massive win that you missed, I think  he was sold to Asia for $800,000.

Essentially all those listed won more than $200,000 so they had a bit of depth to them. Granted that some did it all or near enough to all as 2yo's, nevertheless they did provide some hgih level of competition in those particular years. What I find shallow about say last year, is that Luke's Luck had them covered a long way out as he really was the only real quality horse in both fields. How much quality will be determined by what he does a s a 3yo but if history is anything to go by, it won't be much.

With the exception of Scenic Blast, I don't think there have been many high quality 2yo's in WA in the last ten years that did anything much as 4yo's or older.

Depends what you call high quality.

Just looking at KK placegetters from 2003-2011 (9 years) that have gone on to win stakes races in subsequent years, there's:

2003 - Shout From Maroof (won Hong Kong International Sprint Gr 1 and placed 4 other Group races including 2d Centenary Sprint Cup Gr 1 at 5 - won over AUD$2m)

2005 - No Questions (won Roma Cup Gr 3 and Hyperion S Gr 3 at 4 and placed in 4 othr black type races - won $496,000)

2005 - Hantu (won Sha Tin Trophy Gr 3 at 4 and placed 6 other group races at 4 and 5 inc Gr 1 Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup and over AUD$890,000)

2005 - Ripped (won Grandstand Cup - L at 5 and placed in 6 other black type races at 4 and 5 - won $376,000)

    2006 - Paris Petard (won Belgravia S - L at 3 - only start after 2)

    2007 - Scenic Blast (won Kings Stand S, Lightning S, Newmarket S, all Gr 1 and AUD$2.1m)

    2007 - Roman Time (won York S - L at 4 and placed 6 other black type races - won $633,000)

2008 - Grand Nirvana (won 9 group and listed races and placed in another 10 as an older horse - won $1.1m)

2009 - Wolfe Dreams (won Grandstand Cup - L and placed 2 other listed races - won $512,565)

2010 - Miss Gai Flyer (not a WA horse but won 2 listed races in Melbourne at 3)

2011 - Night War (won Lee  Steere Classic - Gr 3 at 3 and placed in Placid Ark - L)

That's just the KK placegetters - 11 of the 27 went on to win stakes races as older horses. I'm sure if you looked you would find plenty of other 2 yo winners that went on.

For example there's Covertly who won 3 x 2 yo races in November and December before running 4th in the 2004 KK and then winning the Sires. She won the Railway S - Gr 1 at 5 and $765,000.

2 other recent Sires Produce winners to win stakes races as older horses are God Has Spoken (3 x 2 yo wins inc  2009 Sires and 4 group and listed wins as an older horse - won $957,000 to date) and Bliss Street (2 x 2 yo wins inc 2011 Sires and since then won Tranquil Star Gr 3 and placed in 3 other Melbourne black type races).

Then there are horses like Universal Ruler, Local Legend etc etc.

Nitpicking . . Oroya Gold ran 2nd in the Hannans.

You're right darkshines. He ran 2nd in the Belmont Sprint as well (to Marasco). So he actually placed in 6 group and listed races as an older horse. He did also win 4 city races to age 5 and $438,000 but as the list is meant to be KK placegetters who went on to win stakes races as older horses I've taken him off.
