MIATA (Bombastic Shiraz- Winsome Bluebird) stayed undefeated in 7 starts at Cannington with another brilliant, this time come from behind victory. After tasting defeat, for the first time, at her previous start in the final of the Group 3 SA Oaks Miata jumped away fairly from box 3 although beaten to the first corner by most of her rivals. The yet to turn two year old bitch railed through strongly to settle in third place entering the back straight. Down the back Miata went around Certainly Is and then pushed underneath of the leader Best Behaviour before clearing out to win by 8 lengths in 30.23. Remarkably the 30.23 time is the slowest she has recorded in her 7 starts at the track. The two placegetters behind Miata in Ever Grace and Cold Drink had both started in Free To All company at their previous start showing that she will have few problems when she steps up to the top line here in WA. Trainer Paul Stuart could set Miata for the upcoming Group 2 All Stars to be run next month at Cannington.

Miata went around last night and found all sorts of trouble again, getting beaten. Gee they sure get their money's worth out of greyhounds? Raced only last Saturday night.

Was there and she blew the start - found trouble on the first turn and then found trouble on the 3rd turn - still a terrific run, but when you miss the kick - luck comes into it!

Most greyhounds race weekly - sometimes they get nommed more than that.

Word is that MIATA is heading for a short spell and will resume over 642m.

Both very good things, think she needs a short freshen up and the extra distance will suit her perfectly!

Miata also in preliminary list of 30 invitees for TOPGUN in Melbourne. Doubt whether that will be her mission.

Caught the replay of the interview with Paul Stuart the other day. Said Miata would probably resume in the All Stars then head up in distance.

Miata trialled a record 24.14 at Cannington last night post to post. This is 0.06secs quicker than her previous best time. She is ready to come back in top form.

  • this is a final so did race last week - ran 30.22

she is becoming too slow a beginner for my liking - certainly cant take $1.20 in a field of good dogs like this is

She is going to 642m next start or atleast that appears to be her main aim this time in - but she will get beaten every now and then, when luck goes against her, from the back of the field.

Was an incredibly good run last week, but I agree re. the price - I just try and stand her out in a quartet or trifecta!
  • theduketheduke    284 posts
Think price will be closer to $1.60.

642m again - probably work her up to the 715m (fitness wise)

Exciting times for local greyhound racing with a potential superstar of her ability around town!

    Story from The West:

WA chasing sensation Miata will use the Cannington Distance Gift (715m) series next month as a dress- rehearsal for the Group 1 Galaxy (715m).

The three heats of the Distance Gift will be run on January 7 and the final held a week later.

The heats of the Galaxy are run on January 28 with the $120,000 final set down for February 4.

Miata continued her phenomenal record-breaking rampage when she smashed the 642m record of Octanol (36.76sec.), set in February 2009, by 0.21 at Cannington last Saturday week with a stunning 36.55 run.

Last Saturday, the Bombastic Shiraz bitch again surpassed Octanol's time - but was 0.13 outside her own mark - when running away to an emphatic 11-length win over Pakenham Lass, her 12th victory from 15 starts.

Trainer Paul Stuart said Miata had pulled up well from her two hard runs in the past week but she was unlikely to butter-up again next Saturday night.

Stuart has always maintained that Miata would be suited racing over a distance, despite her blitzing three State records over 530m in the infancy of her career earlier this year.

"She's all fine, but she is a little bit tired as she gets accustomed to running over the extra ground," Stuart said. "I'd like her to have three or four gallops over the 715m before the Galaxy.

"She may have another run this year. It depends on field sizes.

"I had some thoughts taking her across for the Sale Cup but it came up a bit too early."

Miata has strong family ties to the Galaxy and if she won the final, she would create a rare chapter in the history of the race.

Her half-brother Blue Lorian is the reigning Galaxy champion. Blue Lorian is by Surf Lorian and was out of the previous litter from Miata's dam Winsome Bluebird.

Peter Whye owned and trained Blue Lorian and his daughter Nicole Wheeler-Whye is a part-owner of Miata.
