Cox Plate winner Shamus Award is ready to resume in Saturday week’s Group I CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield after pleasing trainer Danny O’Brien with his latest Flemington jumpout.
Shamus Award had a quiet jumpout last Friday but O’Brien asked jockey Craig Williams to give the colt a stronger workout on Friday morning.
Williams had Shamus Award on the speed throughout the 800-metre hit-out before asking the three-year-old to quicken to the line to finish well clear of his opposition, which included Group I winner Foreteller, who was always rearward in a gentle trial.
"We asked him to do a little bit more this morning, he was solid to the line and Craig Williams was really pleased,” O’Brien told Racing Victoria.
"His fitness is just where we need it to be and he’s eight days out form resuming in the Orr, so everything’s positive.”
O’Brien said he had set Shamus Award for the Group I Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington but was unsure whether the son of Snitzel would have one or two starts before his March 1 goal.
"He’s definitely going to the Australian Guineas, we’ll decide after the Orr whether he needs another run,” O’Brien said. "If he does run again the logical race would be the Futurity (Stakes).”
"He’s already a Cox Plate winner, so we’re expecting him to be very competitive in anything he runs in.”
