Western Gunna seems to be finding his feet as a racehorse and with a close-up 3rd and a 2nd over similar distance here at Bunbury in his last two runs, if he breaks through for his first win here and you?re not on him you?ll be shaking your head asking yourself why you didn?t back him. Tougher barrier this time around, but I?m willing to overlook that as it should be an unpredictable barrier jump for most of these anyway. After trialling well The Hassler acquitted himself well with a 1.8L 5th in his first run at Ascot. He?ll be better for the run and should rock up on Saturday with a much better picture of what racing?s all about, but he still let 4 horses finish home in front of him last time so I think he?ll get edged out again here. The other interesting one is Shaytarna who has been showing a bit of toe out at Lark Hill and Belmont in trials. Racing, however, is a different kettle of fish to a casual stroll in one?s own time, so I envisage the older, more race-hardened Western Gunna will muscle him out when the whips get cracking. With good barrier form and a debut 2nd here over the same distance, Prohurst Express will hopefully find a smoother stride this time around after racing greenly and he should be able to negotiate a top 3 finish. Kiseki Park will be out to earn back some respect after she decided to dawdle around for a 10L 11th last start at Bunbury. It came off a second here and after a decent barrier trial to give her the confidence to be able to look herself in the mirror again, she might be in the finish too, but I?ll steer clear until she proves it.
4. PROHURST EXPRESS - 3. WESTERN GUNNA - 2. THE HASSLER
SUGGESTED BET - 4. PROHURST EXPRESS $50 x $50

Cyclone Lilly has placed in her last five starts so obviously has some ability. The temptation is to think she?ll break through sooner rather than later and she probably will, but you have to ask whether all these places are starting to mess with her head. Maybe she thinks that's what she's supposed to do, run fast and keep watch over the horse that leads the pack? I?m getting too deep here, all of these recent places have been by a length or more so I?m tipping Cyclone ?Head Case? Lilly to repeat the dose. A good place bet though obviously, so load up there, or why not go each-way and celebrate if she does happen to break through. Sliding in all stealthy-like however is Sunset Superman. With a decent 2nd here on debut he comes into this race better for the run, with a minimum of fuss and without all the mental stigma of repeated close maiden misses. Back over the 1400m after a 4th over 1200m, I expect One Ring to be in the finish also after twice-in-a-row finishing 2nd over the trip at this track.
9. SUNSET SUPERMAN - 11. CYCLONE LILLY - 13. ONE RING
SUGGESTED BET - 9. SUNSET SUPERMAN $50 x $50
Great Odyssey's win as favourite on Boxing Day at Pinjarra holds him in good stead to win again against this field. The main threat is Wargamer who also broke his maiden status last start in Albany so it will be interesting to see which of the two goes on with it here. Astra Sky has only won once in 20 starts but did come 4th here over the same distance in her last run so she will probably looking to be in the top three and has each way claims. You would be hard-pressed backing anything else in this race going on past performances.
1. GREAT ODYSSEY - 2. WARGAMER - 3. ASTRA SKY
SUGGESTED BET - 1. GREAT ODYSSEY $50 x $50
An impressive run on the speed last time around saw Fuchsia Bandana street home for a big maiden break-through win. You?d have to back her again here after that, she was odds-on too and did the business so I think she can do it again. Dawn Approach has had a couple of good runs at Ascot so will appreciate the more relaxed surrounds at Bunbury. He ran a close second here last time following those Ascot runs so he?ll be right in it. Distant Memory had the wood on Dawn Approach last run, but only by a neck, and with the 3kg allowance for apprentice jockey Aaron Rogers, I?m tipping her to lower her colours this time around with the extra 100m for the gelding to work his way in front. Respondent has been impressive with a win and a third from his two starts here at Bunbury so he's the other one that will be sniffing around.
6. FUCHSIA BANDANA - 1. DAWN APPROACH - 2. RESPONDENT
SUGGESTED BET - 6. FUCHSIA BANDANA $50 x $50
Old timer Yamunotri is racing very well at the minute and she squeezed a win against Chop It Out on this track last start. It will be a fascinating race to see if Chop It Out can turn the tables with a slight weight improvement and an extra 100m, I reckon his hungrier, younger legs will bounce back for a win while Yamunotri sits back and enjoys her handy-work from last time after finally breaking a string of drums for a much-deserved salute to the judge. Du Printemps is in peak form and has the promising Chris Parnham on board so should be good value. Black Romeo has a decent record and was racing well in the city in July, forget his poor end to that campaign, he's won first-up before so keep an eye on him here. Mirrannon is also first-up from a spell here and has a good first-up record but no.
8. CHOP IT OUT - 4. YAMUNOTRI - 2. DU PRINTEMPS
SUGGESTED BET - 8. CHOP IT OUT $50 x $50
There's a bit of history between Low Flying and Henny Shaker on this Bunbury track, it's hard to know who will win this next instalment. Low Flying is doing just that at the moment and took the honours the last time these two met so I?ll back her in again here. This is as good a race as any to put a quinella down if you?re going to do it somewhere on the Bunbury card, but if you?re betting quinellas you?re probably a pretty weird unit anyway so who knows who you will back. It will be interesting to see how far the developing Duke Of Vasac has come since his first campaign, the 4-year-old trialled well and we?ll see how he goes first-up here. At the other end of the spectrum you?ve got Bitter Emu and his terrible recent record?if I were him I?d be a pretty bitter character too.
6. LOW FLYING - 5. HENNY SHAKER - 2. DUKE OF VASAC
SUGGESTED BET - 6. LOW FLYING $50 x $50
Backhouse Street has building towards something this campaign, after running in the city he has run two thirds in a row here at Bunbury, and there's no reason he won?t be in the money again in this. A solid each-way bet. It's hard to go past Dirkbrook Diva though who sprinted away for a 2.5L win after being well back on the turn last start, and the extra distance will suit. Dirkbrook Diva to dash away again.
8. DIRKBROOK DIVA - 6. BACKHOUSE STREET - 10. MOSSNIP
SUGGESTED BET - 8. DIRKBROOK DIVA $50 x $50
After a tough initiation in the city, Tiff's Special noticeably appreciated the shift to easier company and the fresh air of the country. She's a special to keep that mojo going down here in Bunbury. Back her to build on that last effort in Pinjarra. On the other side of the coin Sound Effects in coming back down to Bunbury after a tough 7th at Ascot. Can he flex his muscle now he's back at Bunbury and get back on the winner's list? Stingray Pete will have to improve again after winning his first maiden last start, he's likely to find the going a bit too strong although he's good for an each-way bet. The others are hard to admire in this one.
1. TIFF'S SPECIAL - 2. SOUND EFFECTS - 3. STINGRAY PETE
SUGGESTED BET - 1. TIFF'S SPECIAL $50 x $50
Buhn Lert was caught well back on the turn at Ascot last start and ran home strongly in an eye-catching half-length third. That was her first run from a spell and she?ll strip fitter for this, I?m backing her all the way to repeat it against a weaker field. Back her to win. Vengabus has been running well in Northam and after a short break, should be raring to go so jump on the bus for an each-way ride. Mighty Blonde is the other heavy-hitter here, she's racing well and unlike her rivals is settled in to a rhythm here at Bunbury and might appreciate that. There's a lot to be said for that, I expect Blondie to be cool, calm and collected and to be familiar in her surroundings and to run accordingly. She?ll go well.
6. BUHN LERT - 2. MIGHTY BLONDE - 1. VENGABUS
SUGGESTED BET - 6. BUHN LERT $50 x $50
