Quiet night, stormy, abandoned races, so out come the history books and old papers. The Sunday Times of January 27 1952 informs us that:
  • Flying Halo won the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley.
  • The main event at Ascot was the ANA Handicap of 400 pounds won by Kareme (by Remarc) for trainer G.A.Smith and rider J Marshall.
  • The Welter was won by Lawlock (by Lawmaker) for trainer (H.E) Jock Campbell and Tiger Moore who bought up a treble for the day.
  • At Gloucester Park, an 18 year old Phil Coulson landed his first double and win number 4 and 5 when Super Bloom (mile rate 2.18) won the first race and paid 45 pounds 10 shillings for the win (180/1) and 127 shillings and 6 pence for the place ($91 the win and $12.75 the place........I think!) The other leg was Super Junior who won the Australia Day Handicap as a 6/4 favorite.
  • Meanwhile, plans were set in place for a 2 day Bunbury Race Carnival featuring the McDiarmid Sprint and the Bunbury Cup with total stakes for the round being 2006 pounds. The cup, as is usual practice, will be donated and presented by Mrs Monaghan.

Of interest to anyone???? Probably not but as i say, it's a quiet night!!!

The coverage of Racing and Trotting in the old papers is classical, even reporting on the demonstations after a fav got beat. Quotes from the demonstrators "Go back to reinsman's school" directed to one F. Kersley and a stories about betting plunges on just about every race. Remember them? Plunges?? Some real good goes in those days. I suppose it was the Newspapers or nothing in those days before internet, tablets, mobile phones and spin doctors.

Reg Russell was the Gloucester Park caller - I have some old vinyl records from the 60's that have him, Lionel Lewis and Ken Casselas doing the calls. Lionel was a classic - very excitable and maybe a nip of brandy to warm up on a cold night!!! Doug Gilmour called the races in the 60's for commercial radio - 6PR or was it 6IX?? Very good caller.Think he was after Keith Gollan.

voodoo, my dad was doug chatfield and was before doug gilmore, keith gollan was the course commentator relaying through, i think, 6wf.

dad was great mates with lionel, a real character and hopeless punter.

no stays of proceedings in those days, if you got time it was immediate. we've gone to soft! :)

Falc, Lionel was unique. I've got a recording of him calling an August Cup - about 1965 I think - and you can tell which one he has backed. In fact, you can tell all 4 that he has backed because in the last 2 furlongs and in the run on, he has given each of them and their drivers an almighty serve. It's hilarious. It sort of goes "Down past the ledger and Woody is pumping away with the whip on The District Attorney, by joves he's a very weak animal isn't he, and Dubious June, well she's not much good either and Pythagoras, well if you show him daylight, he's not worth two bob" etc etc.
I can just remember the name Doug Chatfield but moreso Doug Gilmour who was a lovely bloke as well.
