Another Black Caviar?

If you watch Sky Racing World on Wednesday night you will witness the racetrack debut of a Black Caviar in a 1000-metre event at Durbanville in South Africa.

That's right, South African authorities have allowed a horse to be named the same as Australia's undefeated world champion sprinter.

News Limited revealed that South Africa has ignored the unwritten agreement between world racing jurisdictions that protect the names of superstar gallopers.

Australian racing officials are up in arms over the disclosure.

"There is an understanding among racing jurisdictions not to allow the name of a great racehorse to be used again, either in the country of the horse's origin or anywhere else in the world," Racing NSW CEO Peter V'landys said.

"I'll certainly be contacting my South African counterparts to rectify this anomaly immediately.

"This should not have been allowed to happen."

South Africa's Black Caviar is a two-year-old colt by Black Minnaloushe (USA) out of Rock And Raving and will contest a Maiden Juvenile Plate on Wednesday at 9.30pm (AEDST).

Meanwhile, Australia's Black Caviar will have her next start in the Group IWilliam Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley on March 22.

I agree that BLACK CAVIAR should be a protected name given the mare's record

    - but ( with the exception of automatically included from Aust racing - Cox Plate and melb Cup winners)
a name will only be included when applied for and accepted - Mr V'lndy's failed to apply for its inclusion !
he simply let Australian racing down .
The "list" has names on it which are in common usage daily in Australia eg CAVALCADE raced at Geraldton last week. !!!! Maybe the Nth Am owners of Cavalcade (USA) might take exception to the AUS one - because at least they made an application which was accepted.

Devil" - well maybe the Yanks said that about Sandgropers a few years back - there's a horse which has won a few in WA called Caller One - but nowhere near as good as the North Am sprint champion of the same name..

Not too worry guys, all sorted, there will not be two Black Caviar's!
COMMON sense finally prevailed last night after the owners of an unraced South African two-year-old colt dumped the name Black Caviar.

Australian racing authorities were stunned when they learned a horse by the same name as the Peter Moody-trained champ was about to debut on the other side of the planet.

There is an agreement among racing jurisdictions to protect names of champions like Black Caviar.

It was only after The Daily Telegraph highlighted the double-up that South African officials asked the owners to rethink.

Prominent owners and breeders Henry and Patricia Devine, who raced and bred champion Jet Master, said they were only too happy to come up with an alternative to Black Caviar.

In their defence, the name was registered more than two years ago when Black Caviar had won 11 straight, but was yet to become a worldwide phenomenon.

"We all know about Black Caviar, she's very, very special, but we didn't know about her when we named this horse," Patricia Devine said from Johannesburg. "We named him Black Caviar because he's by Black Minnaloushe, and caviar is a sought-after commodity.

"It wasn't until later on when we saw the filly start to make headlines that we became worried. This morning we received a phone call from the jockey club letting us know we better change the name. Even though it's unlucky to change names, there was no way we could have had a name as grand as that.

"Black Caviar is an absolute star. We'd be happy to win just one or two races with this colt. We may have become a laughing stock if we kept that name."

Devine said she submitted the name more than two years ago.

Technically, they could have kept the name given Black Caviar had not achieved international fame, but were more than happy to play ball on this occasion.

"I know how I would have felt if somebody had tried to name their horse Jet Master," she said.

The Devines' Black Caviar was eventually scratched from a maiden in Durbanville, which was to be beamed on Sky Channel tonight, but it had nothing to do with the drama surrounding the name.

"He tweaked a joint. Maybe the bad luck has started already," Devine said.

Racing NSW boss Peter V'Landys yesterday wrote to his South African counterpart, urging that Black Caviar's name be changed.

Black Caviar was one of five horses entered for the opening 1000m scramble at Durbanville by young trainer Justin Snaith.

You would think that within Australia the three codes could have enough common sense to protect superstars of each code. It'd be like I'm The mightyquinn the greyhound, or All Too Hard the trotter - as soon as a runner is found to be above average (superstar level) that name should be banned from use in all three codes.

It is tough to make the world racing bodies follow suit, but we should be able to protect our greats names within this country at the very least!
