EFFICIENT, whose career has been a series of big stage cameos, has succumbed to injury and been retired.

Owner Lloyd Williams said this morning that the nine-year-old had suffered a recurrence of an old injury.

It is likely he will join Graham Salisbury’s clerk of the course team at Heathcote. Salisbury also has the legendary Subzero.

Efficent won the 2006 Victoria Derby and next year the Melbourne Cup.

Two years later the often-injured champion won the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.

In all the veteran had just 29 starts, winning seven. He won $4.7 million in prizemoney.

Efficient had been entered for this year’s Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup and was expected to run in Saturday’s The Metropolitan at Randwick

Freak stayer I was there when he won his Melbourne Cup and I was on Purple Moon and it was all but home when Efficient stormed over the top of him  for a stunning win. Champion stayer who could have been anything but for the injuries, great class and courage to overcome a string of injuries and still perform at the elite level in every prep.
