Belmont R1. Irish Day Luncheon 6/10 Book Now Handicap Preview - Matt Rigby
Its a great way to start the day and the two short ones in the market will be Geiger Rio and Kalahaar. The latter was ordinary last week but didnt have a trial leading up. Having said that, I'm not sure he's a 1000m horse, so as a bookie I'll be risking him. Geiger Rio was outclassed by Peggies Dream last time out but beat the rest easily enough. I think the 1000m is his go.
The Puzzler should get the pie run here and had no luck at his last two, winning one of them. Donger aboard, each way, that will do me.
The other chance is Recode with Harvey aboard but he doesnt slip in that well at the weights here.
6. THE PUZZLER - 3. KALAHAAR - 8. GEIGER RIO

The should get along in this 1000m race with Saytorio, Excelorada, Marmaa, Gotham City and Full Clip engaged. Saytorio is a handy horse and I think he goes best fresh and at this trip. He'll be my pick, but marginally over Final Cut and Stacks On.
Excelorada has not been one of my horses, but has done nothing wrong. His run sitting outside the leader last time out was good, but most of these will meet him better at the weights.
Gotham City can improve but I couldnt tip even a small bet on him. Blacksmith has left the Price camp and all was not well with the galloper last campaign. He's much better than he showed and at his best would be beating these.
2. SAYTORIO - 7. FINAL CUT - 8. STACKS ON
Completely devoid of interest. Fair Hunter, provided he hasn't trained off, should just win but the price you're taking is going to be short now.
The Corporation can stretch him to the line, but I still dont think he's a genuine stayer. If he can get it soft up front, there's a chance he can outsprint Fair Hunter, but that's a long shot.
1. FAIR HUNTER - 3. THE CORPORATION - 2. SMART TWISTER
It might be worth checking how the track is playing at this stage because you have Lee Rani and Pattie Me Lass, who should get to the top easily here, then you have back markers in Disco Bling and November Red.
Lee Rani, on face value, doesnt get the 1400m. But with a soft lead and if she settles, stranger things have happened. I'd say Pattie Me Lass will end up in the breeze by default, and if the track is playing that way, shes a big chance.
Disco Bling put in the eye catcher last start and he's the one to beat provided Forrest can steer him correctly.
1. DISCO BLING - 9. PATTIE ME LASS - 6. NOVEMBER RED
Jestpatim impressed first up, even though he peaked in the run. It was obviously a late nomination by Harrison after entries were extended. Given that was probably his trial, he'll come forward a long way here, even with the big impost.
If Grey Cheval can get some cover, with a bit of speed up front, she can be the danger from the Simon Miller yard.
Culprit drops to 53kg with Mallyon aboard and gets 6kg from Jestpatim but the question on everyone's lips is, can he get past the 1000m? The jury is out but there was nothing wrong with his first two runs this time in.
Other chances are Tempestuous Strike, who ruined his chances by over racing last start, Grand Crusade, who Chris Nelson has a massive opinion of, and first starter, Regal Romp.
1. JESTPATIM - 8. GREY CHEVAL - 4. CULPRIT
It was an outstanding trial by Platinum Rocker and this is seriously a bunch of B Graders.
Summer Swallow has improved at her last three runs, but 60kg could stop her.
Undercover Lizzy improved out of sight with blinkers, but would probably need that same improvement again to beat the fave here.
While I dont think her race form is anything to crow about, she'll get the world's perfect run here. The only issue I can see is lack of evident pace, but she should overcome that by racing close enough to spring off a slowish tempo.
4. PLATINUM ROCKER - 1. SUMMER SWALLOW - 3. UNDERCOVER LIZZY
The Goodwood is a tough old race because we know there are only a few that will go forward with any conviction. Werd will be there with possibly Mega Steel (if he went back to his old ways).
Bites the Dust has continued to improve in this type of company. We'll bank on a decent speed from Werd (lets face it, he knows no other way). She'll be running on stoutly with Our Ol' Fella and Cavallo Pazzo, both of whom cop a 5kg weight rise.
The old boy Hadabeclorka has run two really good races. He's the smokey here and shouldnt be double figures.
Interestingly, Werd has had two runs at the 1400m for two placings. Once was in the Belmont Sprint where he was left alone in front and nailed by a long head by Grand Nirvana. Stranger things have happened!
11. BITES THE DUST - 7. CAVALLO PAZZO - 1. HADABECLORKA
I could pick you a couple of bets to have in this race, but officially, I can only tip one! Black Romeo has been the object of early support and was impressive in his two wins this campaign. He had excuses the other two runs.
Cobble Lane and McScar should ensure a steady pace. Romp to Fame will box seat and the Staeck on - Kersley formula cannot be argued with. I'd be having a saver on the Quest for Fame gelding.
Go watch the run of Triumphant Hero last start as a $101 shot. I'd be throwing a few dollars on this gelding too even though he's unfashionably trained and ridden.
Hi Kilmore rounds out my selections. He's done nothing wrong this campaign and won with a similar weight last start.
Suggested Bets: Black Romeo at $9, Romp 'To Fame (save) at $12, small each way on Triumphant Hero at $51.
18. BLACK ROMEO - 4. ROMP TO FAME - 5. HI KILMORE
A really good race to start with today, only a small field but you could make a case for most if not all runners here. Tiger Pete was most impressive last week and still looks the one to beat, even though the switch back to 1000 metres and the seven day back up are a concern, but he is all class. His chances should be enhanced with horses like Lee Rani and Modello in the field, we should get a truly run race if they set a solid pace in front. Galiletto has won seven from twelve, and all three races last campaign and is a very good horse, possibly the 1000 metres is a little short for him, but he certainly commands a lot of respect here. Dueton ran a pretty good race last start behind Settle Strada, his form this time in has been as good as ever, and Lee Rani probably sets the pace here, and carries only 53.5kgs, she may prove hard to run down, hasnt the class of the other runners but is still a last start city winner and may give some cheek.
2. TIGER PETE - 4. GALILETTO - 3. DUETON
SUGGESTED BET - 2. TIGER PETE $30
Another good contest coming up here between some good types. Two weeks ago Thateldo defeated Camporella and Spin Da Wheels quite easily, it is hard to see the tables turing this afternoon. Thateldo carries the same weight as he did that day, maybe the outside barrier is a little concern here, but a 2 1/2 length win was quite emphatic, and he should go on his winning ways today. Camporella was the champion two year old last season, its obvious to say she needed the run badly when racing first up a fortnight ago, but she disappointed badly that day, she must strip a lot fitter here today and be respected on her two year old form in her previous campaign. Spin Da Wheels must be setting some sort of record, he just keeps on racing week after week over a variety of distances, but is proving remarkably durable, he won very well again last week, and must also be considered a good chance once again today. They really look the big guns in this race, possibly the last start midweek winner in Rougeau could be the best of the others, drawn nicely and with no weight to carry.
3. THATELDO - 1. CAMPORELLA - 2. SPIN DA WHEELS
SUGGESTED BET - 3. THATELDO $60
Classique Ivory has been about the place without winning over the last few weeks, he really gets his chance to right that this afternoon. He is coming off a very close second to Uncle George two weeks ago at his first start over the middle distance, and should be improved by that run, he does look like he will run out a strong 2100 metres here. Full Steam Ahead will appreciate the massive drop in weight from last week, he did seem to flounder under that impost, and the slow track conditions certainly didnt help, Paul King is the new rider today and 55.5kgs appears to bring him back into this race with strong hopes. Starlight Lady has been very up and down this campaign, at her best would certainly test these but it doesnt appear she is at her best at present, but must still be a place chance just on her class, and Rantorini just doesnt seem to win too many, always in the firing line though, and a definate novelty hope here once again.
5. CLASSIQUE IVORY(NZ) - 3. FULL STEAM AHEAD - 2. STARLIGHT LADY
SUGGESTED BET - 3. FULL STEAM AHEAD $40
Rose Of Choice looks very hard to beat once again today, she was scratched from a race on Wednesday that she looked to have at her mercy, so connections must be confident today. She followed a couple of good thirds at the start of her campaign with a nice win here on August 3rd, today she has a perfect barrier draw and still carries a good weight with Alex Hearn on board claiming 3kgs, she has the class to cover this field quite easily you would think. Double Jester has certainly found a new lease of life, she finally broke through for a maiden victory three starts ago, and has since won another two races, she races from the back of the field, so might be powering home down the long Belmont straight here, if she can continue this improved form must be a chance. Resetgold is just so consistent, but finds it very hard to win, no doubt she will go close again today, but is probably better for novelty bets once again. Surrendering looks to have ability and could also figure when the whips are cracking.
4. ROSE OF CHOICE - 6. DOUBLE JESTER - 3. RESETGOLD
SUGGESTED BET - 4. ROSE OF CHOICE $40
We have a possible odds on favorite here with Settle Strada to face his opposition at weight for age in the Goodwood Sprint, the ones that havent been able to get near him over recent weeks, stand very little chance of doing so under these conditions. He had brought up a listed race treble over the winter months and looks like making it four this afternoon. We do have a couple of good types resuming though, namely Vermeer and Reimbursement and they may be the ones chasing Settle Strada home. Vermeer won the Pinjarra Sprint and was placed in the Bunbury Stakes in his last preparation, he was racing in the best form of his career over the Autumn months and is resuming today on the back of a good trial win two weeks ago, he also has good first up form to his name. Reimbursement was narrowly beaten by the ill fated Texan at his last start, which was the Hannans Handicap in Kalgoorlie almost a year ago, he is a quality sprinter at his top though, lets hope he can recapture some of that old form this time in. The Entourage may be next best, he has been chasing Settle Strada home lately, and will no doubt do so again here, but may be one to insert into novelties for a little value.
3. SETTLE STRADA - 5. VERMEER - 1. REIMBURSEMENT
SUGGESTED BET - 3. SETTLE STRADA $70
Galoubay has been racing in the best form of his career of late, and no reason why he cant nab another victory here. One thing this time in is he has hit top form and sustained it start after start, so given a lovely barrier position here and the claim for top apprentice Chris Parnham, he looks extremely hard to topple. He does alays race in a forward position, so should stay out of trouble and be given every possible chance again today. Dangerously looks dangerous once again here, he hasnt fared well with the draw, but does get back and come home strongly so that probably negates that factor, his last two starts have been most impressive. One that may be at good odds is Glintz, he did win five races in NSW, had a start at Ascot last December, but did everything wrong that day, coming back from a spell here it may pay to watch betting markets with this horse from the strong Durrant stable. Black Romeo butters up again here, probably back to his best distance and looks a place chance at least. Another resuming is Sireeze who won a few on the trot when last in work during last Spring.
3. GALOUBAY - 9. DANGEROUSLY - 6. GLINTZ(NZ)
SUGGESTED BET - 3. GALOUBAY $40
Hard to spilt a few of these who are showing good form of late, but we will go for Danablue in the end, he generally stays out of any trouble given he likes to race in the lead or on the pace at worse, should have the speed to cross and eleminate the problem of a wide draw and should certainly be there down the straight looking a winning chance. I See Luck hasnt seen any luck at all with the extreme wide barrier, he has done everything but win a race this campaign, has been extremely costly to his followers, but the advice is very strong here, if you have been following him, dont hop off today, surely he gets a change of luck shortly. Mike Two Toes has won at three of six starts, another drawn wide here, and today is as good a field as he has met, but he does look up to this class, certainly one to throw into trifectas and first four bets in this. Hard to leave out Right Honourable, he has won his past two starts, and also races from the front, up a bit in weight today which is the only reason he has been relagated to fourth selection here, a very even race to close the programme this afternoon.
6. DANABLUE - 2. I SEE LUCK - 7. MIKI TWO TOES
