R7. Birthday Stakes - 1 January 1970
|
Fiddlers toughest test yet
A very evenly graded Birthday Stakes with chances galore. At the top of the page Ihtsahymn returns and tackles 62kg of Paul Harvey first-up while at the bottom Under the Sun, formerly with Gai Waterhouse, makes his WA debut. Has only beaten a total of 3 horses home in his past 5 starts but does boast 7 wins and 6 second placings from 26 starts and $375 000 in prize money. This time last year started at $11 at Caufield in a race won by Puissance De Lune, will be interesting to see if Gary Delane can resurrect his career. Without much confidence at all, such is the even quality of the field, I've gone with Fiddlers Elbow who will appreciate the extra furlong and race fitness acquired from his first-up 1000m dash. Has finished in the money at 12 of 15 career starts and 7 of his 9 runs over 1200m. Last time he met Fuchsia Bandana he flew past her down the outside when carrying 1kg more, they meet here on equal weight terms and with a run under his belt I'll go with him. Fuchshia Bandana was electric last campaign, winner at 6 of 11 career starts. Drawn perfectly in barrier 4 with Pike in the saddle, will run the public elect. She will be primed for this race and the McAuliffe stable are in phenominal form. Jim Taylor has a knack of winning big race day events and his two runners, Mendicity and True Storm are both in with claims. Hard to rule any of the runners out but with Ihtsahymn conceeding them 8kg it's hard to see him victorious unfortunately.

I would understand that comment IF OB had drawn further out than barrier 5,but barrier1 is the last thing you would instruct your rider to do!Mr M Campbell, you have alot of explaining to do!

Shame about the weather (mid to late arvo) for the meeting, but seemed like there was a pretty good crowd on hand and all seemed in good spirits - the club need one or two more of these 'days' throughout the Belmont season, as the three country specific 'days'...
