R1. Variety Bash Handicap - Scott Embry
Vaughn Sigley doesn't seem to need a trial to get his gallopers going first-up with both Black Heart Bart and Dawn's Approach winning first-up without a trial this preparation. That does instill me with enough confidence to suggest that the first favourite of the day might just get rolled. He or She was dominant in both victories last preparation when getting back and charging to the line through traffic. His only failure to date was in a slowly run edition of the Listed Raconteur Stakes when beaten 1.3 lengths by Testamezzo. He is all class and immediate fixed odds support from 4s into 3.80 suggests that like his stablemates he will be raring to go first-up. Retro Rocket is the deserving favourite after notching 3 victories in a row including a dominant Saturday display when knocking off Hey Bro by a casual 1.8 lengths after an emphatic 6.5 length Northam maiden win. Has race fitness on his side and those who were willing to take $1.45 in midweek company will surely be enticed by even money. Vengabus is ever consistent and meets He Or She 3kg better at the weights for a 2 length defeat last time they met. Pretty keen on the short priced Retro Rocket - He Or She Quinella.
7. HE OR SHE - 3. RETRO ROCKET - 4. VENGABUS
SUGGESTED BET - 7. HE OR SHE $20 x $30

This is one of the most evenly graded sprints I've seen in a while with every runner holding legitimate winning claims which hopefully will result in a blanket finish. Without any real confidence I've settled on The Entourage who looks to be working towards a well deserved victory only a mere 1106 days after his last win. Recent performances are good enough and if he can hold out Blacksmith and lead is a hope at big odds. Onadowntowntrain has produced back to back 1000m victories and all four of his career wins have come at short course. Handicapper makes things interesting here with Onadowntowntrain conceeding Ysmael 2kg, Terkel 2.5kg and Pure Glamour 2kg from their last start run. I'd love to be tipping Ysmael on top but I just don't know where he will get to from the inside barrier without the advantage of a midweek cutaway rail. He could be climbing all over them like a Stallion in breeding season but with nowhere to go and like many of us in breeding season, luckless.

Mamaroochy is a big imposing filly by Duporth and was looking in picture perfect condition in the mounting yard when resuming from a spell. A drifter in the market but proved way to strong for Molto Allegro who subsequently heads to the Burgess Queen Stakes. Drawn inside of main opponent Secret Nova she should be able to find the rail and dictate terms. More than capable of sitting outside a horse like Our Memory Girl should she fire out of the barrier and lead. Jason Brown jumps off Secret Nova and he rarely abandons Jim Taylor horses so that should be a solid enough lead for punters. Secret Nova the main danger after an impressive debut victory at Northam. Looking for value to round out the trifeca in Warringah Blues who has found market support recently and put together some handy enough midfield finishes in provincial maiden company. Only carries 51kg of Jake Casey and can throw some value into the multiples. Pegatego is unsurprisingly a full brother to Flytego, a noted 1000m horse so with blinkers added to gear I'd expect him to be up on pace in the firing line on debut.
1. MAMAROOCHY - 7. SECRET NOVA - 11. WARRINGAH BLUES
SUGGESTED BET - 1. MAMAROOCHY $50

Chilly Reception has been a model of consistency since arriving in WA from Victoria and looks perfectly placed to again finish in the money. Arguably should have beaten Iron Mare Oakhurst Flyer last start when he leveled up with 150m to run only to have the favourite kick back along the rail. Went down by a head on that occasion with Pants on Friar a length back in third. Meets Pants on Friar 1.5kg better off at the weights having beaten her home so I'm happy to be aboard here. Pants on Friar the obvious second choice and they should be running the quinella. Again with the two favourites in the top 2 I've thrown in some value for third with Brocky's Deal, forget the first-up run when the saddle slipped, effectively a meaningless trial, he can surprise a few. Should big gross gelding Alvares find the fence he'll run a much improved race.
2. CHILLY RECEPTION - 12. PANTS ON FRIAR - 3. BROCKY'S DEAL
SUGGESTED BET - 2. CHILLY RECEPTION $10 x $20

Since being given a months freshen up Dubai Escapde has run in consecutive 1700m races which should see him fit and firing for a return to his favoured distance of 2000m+. Went down by 2.3 lengths to Vital Importance two starts ago but meets her 5kg better at the weights from that encounter with the engagement of Lucy Warwick and the extra 400m will be in his favour. I think third up its perfect timing to jump aboard Dubai Escapade to turn the tables on the favourite. Paseo Del Prado is another super consistent galloper who will enjoy a soft run from the inside gate, my only concern, Ambers Star potentially leading and compounding into his lap around the 600m. Ask Me Nicely showed glimpses of returning to his best form with a fast finishing 5th in the Northam Cup behind Son of Something and Rebelson. Has been steadily falling in the ratings and will win one sooner rather than later.
2. DUBAI ESCAPADE - 1. PASEO DEL PRADO - 5. ASK ME NICELY (NZ)
SUGGESTED BET - 2. DUBAI ESCAPADE $10 x $20
Silver Magic Ships looks to have an abundance of ability and should be awefully hard to beat if given another perfect Pontiff ride. Was all the rage last start with punters in the que to collect rounding the home corner. She loomed up 4 and 5 wide and once balanced was always going to win. Laid inwards and did cause interference to a couple of horses who have since returned victorious namely Castle Retreat and Hyde Park Flyer. With top end speed horses Fuld's Bet and Shengmu likely to run them along out in front everything should be perfectly placed for the Pontiff to pounce with the Sebring Filly. I've got another two run on types to round out my selections, Top Show and Liberty Rise who both got way too far out of their ground last start and charged to the line along the fence. Both will get back in running from their respective alleys and be motoring home late in the race. Just tend to think Silver Magic Ships will settle a few lengths further forwards than Top Show and be good enough to hold her out late. Value aplenty in a wide open Burgess Queen.
8. SILVER MAGIC SHIPS - 3. TOP SHOW - 15. LIBERTY RISE
SUGGESTED BET - 8. SILVER MAGIC SHIPS $30 x $40
Opinions seemed to be divided on Respondent as to whether he is one of WA's next top horses or whether he was a 3 year old flash in the pan but I think his first-up run will prove to most that he has an abundance of ability and will continue on towards the top of WA racing. Seemingly unsuited by drawing the inside barrier first-up he will derive benefit from the run and second-up drawn beautifully in barrier 5 I think he will take a stack of beating with W.Pike in the saddle. I'm going to do the unthinkable for second and tip "That Old Cat" - Ranger. First-up run was only average but his second-up record is fairly handy with 6 cheques from 8 attempts and remembering that in the Hyperion this year he finished with a head of Elite Belle who convincingly rolled Barakey last week. Wroughted looks very well weighted at 55kg and meets Miss Rose De Lago 3kg better at the weights from their dead-heat finish. Loves 1400m, loves Ascot and at 10s represents excellent eachway value.
11. RESPONDENT - 2. RANGER - 15. WROUGHTED
SUGGESTED BET - 11. RESPONDENT $30 x $40

I couldn't split my top 3 in Kheleva, Wild Charger and Dark Delight so I'll simply throw them into a cheeky trifecta to round out the day. Kheleva is a 1400m specialist, winner at 5 from 6 starts at the distance and has the services of P.Harvey in the saddle; Wild Charger is latent with ability but a fairly frustrating horse to follow, seeming to find trouble whenever he races; Dark Delight a notorious wallet burner for favourite punters, finishing bridesmaid on 6 occasions in a 13 start career including 4 of her 6 runs at Ascot. In the end I've stuck with the Pontiff and regardless of the 59kg impost believe Kheleva is the one to beat. Wild Charger found a heap of trouble last week after Darren forgot to mention him once in the call, knocked around like Lachie Neale at the bottom of a pack, he did well to finish as close to the winner as he did. Finally who can disregard Pike in the last, he seems to win more of these than he loses so Dark Delight to round out my trifecta.
4. KHELEVA - 5. WILD CHARGER - 9. DARK DELIGHT

His attack on the ball and his courage in general is first class. Yes he has missed a few games through suspension, but mainly through collecting a player with a late bump just after disposing of the ball. Not so much through dirty tactics that are behind the play etc.
I do agree he needs to be a bit more careful at times (and he knows that too) but I still don't think he goes out there to deliberately hurt someone ;)
