Shane Edwards faces a suspension of his trainer’s license if he does not cooperate with a Racing and Wagering WA investigation into his alleged on-selling of horses to Singapore without their owner’s permission.

RWWA stewards have advised Edwards he must make himself available to be questioned by RWWA principal investigator Phil O’Reilly within the next week.

In a media release issued today, chief steward Brad Lewis said stewards will take action if Edwards refuses to participate in the investigation.

Edwards, who relocated to Malaysia to train horses in November, is believed to have debts of more than $500,000.

He is alleged to have sold horses owned by WA clients to Singapore without their knowledge.

One owner is building evidence to go to the WA fraud squad to seek charges against Edwards for illegally selling racehorse Mr Maheraja, who has raced in Singapore as Taser Gun under the name of trainer Desmond Koh.

The same owner is also seeking to have a caveat put on Edwards’ home to try to retrieve money paid to the trainer.

“Through the assistance of the Malaysian stewards, RWWA stewards have now issued correspondence to Mr Shane Edwards advising him that is required to make himself available to be questioned by the RWWA principal investigator within seven days,” Lewis said.

“Mr Edwards was further advised that in view of the seriousness of the matter, in the event that he did not respond within the required time or otherwise refuse to participate as directed, the stewards will give consideration to invoking the provisions of Local Rule 10 and directing that his licence…be suspended pending outcome of the inquiry.”

RWWA today revealed the matter involves up to 16 horses, some of which were first exported to Singapore in 2008.

Lewis defended RWWA’s handling of the matter, saying no public announcements were made until now to avoid compromising the investigation.

O’Reilly has interviewed Koh and obtained documents in relation to the export and transport of the horses in question.

Stewards intend to conduct a formal hearing about the matter soon after the completion of the investigation.

I agree he is innocent until convicted, but he needs to come home and explain his side of the story.
From the reports so far, it does not look good for him.
What astounds me is a trainer would be so stupid to think they could get away with what is alleged.

if he did it i'm sure it's not cos he is stupid...i'd guess it was cos he was greedy or desperate..

You are comparing Cookson to Edwards Funk? My god you are a hard, hard man. I think thats a little rich.
  • TheFunksterTheFunkster    3,840 posts
Not really comparing - i wouldn't bother wasting keystrokes on that exercise. Just labelling both as rotten apples, which is fair enough, don't you think?
  • paraleticparaletic    3,750 posts
not prepared to bury the bloke just yet, let him give his account of the story and we will see whats up. I think thats fair.

what they did with the horse is old news, many many people who have a horse here have sent it to Singapore and Malaysia on a deal, the deal is The Asians pay the freight and training fees and the Aust owner gets 1/2 the stakemonies earnt. If the horse is no good naturally the Asians will get rid of it, they are not going to pay up for it if it cant win a race so they delete them. There have been many horses that have been a success up there and the W A owners have profited nicely. I myself have done t on 1 occasion, they paid the freight and training fees, when it wins I get 30k + 1000 win tickets on the win dividend. It won 1st up and I got paid and the horse belonged to them. John Quinlivan from Heritage did it successfully for years

thanks PB....i'd heard similar and can see why there is confusion, especially if the horse doesn't do well..be interesting to see if there is more to this situation.

The key is pb: you knew what the deal was, these owners claim they didn't.
I got shafted sending one to Malaysia too, was told the buyers pay the freight, then I get a bill for $10k which forced me to quick sale to pay my bill. You guessed it, I was offered $10k!

I've been shafted more ways than I care to admit. It makes you gravitate to only the most rock solid and trustworthy people, of whom there are plenty by the way.
A bloke told me once " in racing, there are those you need to know, and those you don't want to know"

only a rumour (as I only deal in rumours), but the Bondi Spy tells me a former leading trainer (training in Esperance ATM) bought Mr E's car when he left, looks like the finance company think they own the car.

The first of many more allegations that will no doubt surface.

I don't think he will come back to face the music personally....

If the allegations are proven I will feel even sorrier for his partner and 3 kids. It would be hard for them no doubt.

I heard the car story to. Makes sense that it was sold for such a good price!
